Think about now watching. I don't know, thousands and thousands of people on loop, just stuffing garlic on their face. Is that something that I wanna do with my life?
AndiOne second for everyone to cringe.
TannerOh yeah.
SupsThis is so TikTok
Tannerdo they really do that? See, I, as a kid, I used to collect rocks and bugs, but I didn't know this was cool.
SupsMy takeaway is, are you watching love island now?
Andihello and welcome to this episode of the, I should have known podcast, the trivia podcast that can't be trusted each week. Our Quizmaster presents you with four big facts on a topic, but one of those facts is a lie we're continuing with hot stuff. And today I'm your quiz master Andy. And I'm doing a find the fake episode of TikTok trends. So I will present you with four trends, but one of them I have invented. So join our other hosts, soups and Tanner in figuring out which one is the lie.
TannerSo these are hot,
Andithey're hot TAC trends. Yeah.
SupsWe are doing an episode of TikTok, but the three of us don't have a TikTok account. Yeah. So we kind of experts already. So I love this
AndiYeah. This should be entertaining. I have a feeling like if you spend significant time on TikTok, this will be very
TannerYeah Probably
AndiSome of the numbers on these it's astounding. One of the issues is what's a trend, right? There's no quantifiable word for trend. the way I did it was basically if a publication or journalist is talking about it, it must be popular enough. Mm-hmm so that's kind of my metric for trend I did look up views on like hashtags. Cause you can do that without an account. Yeah. But. It's hard to say what a trend is,
SupsRight?
AndiSo my fake one. It's not like zero people do this. Right. Because I don't think you could come up with something that zero people do. Yeah. But it's considerably lower and it's like, Not a, thing.
TannerLike it's not trending yet. Yes.
AndiIt's not trending yet
SupsWho knows? Maybe after this episode. Yeah.
Andisure. You know me? I'm a trendsetter.
Tanneryes.
AndiI'm hot on all the
Tannertrends. So
Andiare low hanging fruit.
SupsOkay.
Andiwhat country doest, TikTok originate from
Tannerah,
SupsChina
AndiYes. It's from China. And bonus question. What year was it launched?
SupsI would say 2016.
AndiOoh, right on 2016, it was launched. And if you don't know, if you are even less in the loop than me, TikTok is a video hosting app where it has very short videos and like an automatic. Algorithm feed. So it just keeps playing videos for you. You don't have to go looking it's kinda like YouTube auto play.
TannerOne of the things is it's synchronized to music. That's a big thing,
Andiright? Yeah So this is a whole thing that, so I do not ever turn the volume up on my phone. Ever. My phone is always on silent at all times. Yeah, apparently sound is important in TikTok, which like my thing is who are these annoying people who are just like, I don't know. Do you listen to sound on your
SupsYes because that's because most people are on headphones earphones now, nowadays. So
Tanneryeah True
AndiI find that so annoying. So yeah, I miss a lot of the, the songs and whatever. And it's like, TikTok does not appeal to me. Like the sensory overload just stresses me out. So, yeah, these should be
Tannerfun.
Supsyeah, I'm ready for some TikTok trends. Oh right Yeah
Andiso trend number one, Little raw garlic challenge. So TikTok is pretty popular with food and cooking mm-hmm and this challenge shouldn't be that surprising on is what it sounds like. But it's not just that you eat raw garlic. Okay, It's like a leveled up. Ah, the challenge is to get as many clothes of garlic into your mouth as possible and chew.
TannerOoh. To release all. Flavors and aromas.
AndiYeah. So like, people made a big thing about like, you have to chew. Okay. If you just put 'em in your mouth, that's nothing you have to chew. So from what I could tell because of COVID many people lost taste and smell. And so I think originally it kind of started as people did videos of themselves eating like raw onions and eating raw garlic and being completely unbothered. And then it kind of just blew up Yeah. So this hashtag for raw garlic challenge. It had 108 million views
SupsThink about now watching. I don't know, thousands and thousands of people on loop, just stuffing garlic on their face. Is that something that I wanna do with my life?
TannerI would feel so bad for the garlic. You're wasting all that garlic.
SupsI mean, I'm not the most productive person on the planet. It's not like I'm utilizing every That doesn't mean I'm gonna be staring on my phone phone screen for hours and hours, right. To see somebody. But it sounds very talkish. Yeah. If it's fake then, well done, Andy, you're already a TikTok expert,
TannerI mean people. Stuffing their face full of guard. Like that's
Anditerrible and
Tannerchew and shoeing have to chew. But I have heard of like older things before TikTok was a thing. Like you put a cup of cinnamon in your mouth and then try to
Andiswallow Oh I think it's a tablespoon.
TannerOkay. Table
Andia human being can put a cup.
Tanneryeah Or when I was growing up, it was like put as many marshmallows in your mouth
Andiyeah,
Supsyeah. In a way I think tos also reviving a lot of these old stupid pranks. Yeah. Which Like I think also, the attention span is reducing I mean, I work in marketing and the average people that watch like an ad is like, Oh, 0.2 seconds. So people love this stuff and I mean, it's more like a commentary on the society then. Yeah Yeah
AndiIt feels like to me, like a rat cage, just getting the little drop of sugar water. Yeah. And you're just addicted to it and you just keep going and going right.
Supsright There's actually some really intelligent things On TikTok I don't also want to discount the platform saying that is total crap. Mm-hmm
AndiI also think the isolation of COVID and lockdown, like TikTok is something to do. Right. And it is a distraction. Like sometimes it is funny or interesting.
TannerI mean, it, does sound really interesting. I don't know. Could be fake. Cause you love garlic. That's one of her
Andifood
SupsI mean, this definitely sounds like a trend that could be in TikTok. The COVID angle gives it nice ring to it yeah. Yeah Let's hear the other three
Andiall right. To trend number two, teeth filing. God.
TannerNo.
SupsOh man.
AndiOne second for everyone to cringe.
TannerOh yeah.
AndiOkay. So now we're in the realm of Genuinely harmful and stupid behaviors. Yeah. So teeth filing is exactly what it sounds like it's people using usually nail files. board like an Emory board on their teeth.
SupsThis is so TikTok
Tannerdo they really do that? I
AndiYes
SupsAndy Yes
TannerI don't know
AndiThis was kind of early like in 2020, and actually I couldn't find. Views for it because TikTok has banned they have removing videos from the platform because it is so dangerous So yeah, basically like some people have little bumps on their teeth or their teeth aren't perfectly straight. and dentists do file. People's. teeth but you should not do it at home. no,
Tannerthat's sounds memory but
AndiYeah, yeah. and then the enamel on the outside of your teeth protects your teeth. And so if things go badly, you can have issues with cold sensitivity, it can be weaker. They're more prone to cavities and some people. Even have filed their teeth for crowns. Into like the little shark teeth
TannerYeah when you wanna get veneers or crowns, the dentist will shave it down to tiny little nubs
Andisome people decided to do that at home God. And then not only at home, but then film themselves and then put it on the internet on TikTok
TannerLike a lot of places do this with like medical tourism. So people will go to like Turkey is usually the example to get it for very cheap and so this was recently on like love island. I think and it sounds very painful.
SupsSorry. My takeaway is, are you watching love island now? wow.
AndiJealous
TannerI
Supsevery day I'm learning something
Andinew
Tanneryeah,
Supsyeah
AndiYeah. So then dentist did reaction videos being like, do not do this A lot of this stuff too, is because of the pandemic mm-hmm like people were saying they're like I can't go to the dentist for this little cosmetic thing. I'll just file my teeth at home.
SupsSure. If you wanna harm yourself, you're most welcome to do
Andithat, then put it on the
Tannerinternet. Yeah. There's like a definite audience of watching people get medical stuff done, like pimple popping
SupsI wanna say very likely this happened.
AndiYeah, it makes my skin crawl. This next one is pretty fun.
TannerOkay. Good. Bleach me
AndiYes Yes TikTok trend number three, gobbling core.
TannerSo what
SupsWait what
Tanneris this like a fashion style instead of like normal core yeah. Or cottage core
AndiYes, Yes exactly. So these are called aesthetics. Okay. So they're very popular in the internet and now TikTok and yes, Golin core is an aesthetic. It is related to cottage. which is hugely popular. It's about wearing like pre-industrial clothing and being out in a small cottage out in nature. It's usually very feminine, very pretty. And Golan core is kind of its darker little cousin. Yeah. So people Do makeup and stuff. Like Golans no way. And it's more about focusing on the dirtier elements of nature. So like playing in the dirt mushrooms bugs and it's a lot of collecting cuz Golans and traditional European fantasy, like to collect things
Tannermm-hmm
AndiAnd so it's about like, collecting shells, collecting bugs, collecting mushrooms, collecting all kinds of little things in nature. It's about chaos. And it's especially popular with non-binary people actually
SupsOh,
Andicause it's less feminine and pretty sure it's more of like a mixture of
TannerSee, I, as a kid, I used to collect rocks and bugs, but I didn't know this was cool. I didn't know other people
Andidid this. well, did you dress like a Golin and skip around in
Tannerfilm myself
AndiAnd film Yourself? Yeah. It's cause you remember, these are all
TannerWell I mean yeah, if I did they're on, on tapes
AndiYeah. Yeah Right.
Supswow Okay And this, trend is like still active what was the time period of this
AndiIt was especially popular in the summer of 2021. But it's probably still fairly popular. I mean, cottage core is huge. Mm-hmm the hashtag Golan core on TikTok has 1.2 billion views with a B
Tannerwith a B.
AndiOh, what Yeah. So I think it's safe to say this is a trend Yeah
TannerYeah. I've also heard that the hashtag for this summer, instead of like hot girl summer it's feral girl
Andisummer
Tanneryeah. It's so it's like hot girl. Summer's
Andilittle cousin. Yeah. People did describe that as feral and
Tannerchaotic. Yeah. Yeah. This fits right in,
SupsIt sounds real to me. Yeah.
TannerI mean, going mushroom picking. I think that would be really, really good on TikTok.
SupsYeah, I think, I mean, it has all the elements of a TikTok
Tannertrend taking Yeah. Yeah. Getting dirty and pulling worms out of the, dirt and going fishing with them and stuff Sure
Andiit, wow You really got Gowin cord down, I think Is
Tannerthis yours sounds like normal life. Yeah.
Supswhere are you launching your channel?
TannerRight. Me and my grandma. We could totally launch this.
AndiLike I'm from a rural place. I grew up playing in the dirt, like outside constantly. So like, it's very funny to watch people like LARP my life. Like
TannerYeah.
Andiit's like
TannerThat's so 40.
SupsI'm just wondering if it has 1.2 billion views and I'm sure media across the world covered it Yeah And somehow it never popped up on my feed
Tannerman Sounds like it could be made up
SupsI mean, for Andy, this hits like close to home. Right. Yeah
AndiAll right So TikTok trend number four, the strawberry question.
TannerStrawberry
AndiYes. So this is a kind of a questionnaire survey kind of So you would film yourself, asking someone, this question. Okay. So I'm going to ask you guys this question.
TannerOkay. Let's hear it.
AndiAll right. If you were walking past a strawberry field, would you take a strawberry and eat it if you were hungry?
TannerOh, it's like an ethics question. I thought it was gonna be like, are strawberries berries
Supsknow Yeah. If I was hungry, most likely, yes,
TannerI would not. It's not
Andimy Okay.
Supsoh wow.
TannerIs that
Andiwe're gonna we're
Supswhat if there's nothing else to do at this? Like yeah
Tannerhungry you are. I think, right. I still would say I shouldn't. have, ah, it depends how, how hungry I am. My ethics change with the context.
AndiAll right. So there are kinda some follow up questions if you say yes Okay. So how many strawberries would you take
Tanneroh,
SupsOoh. If they're like all together,
Andiyeah It's a strawberry field they're growing in a, in a field.
SupsI know five, six.
TannerOne, to prevent me from dying. Yes. I mean, this is an extreme
Supsif I was eating, then might as well
Tannerlead from I like that. Yeah. I like that. If you go in for one, why not six? Yeah. I still say no, but if I'm like dying then maybe one,
AndiAnd what if the farmer saw you? What would you do?
Supsyou I would pretend that I didn't see him. oh, is that yours?
Tannersorry. they were public use. I don't
SupsI have a feeling we are doing really bad at this place
AndiYeah. So this is very funny. If you know what the strawberry question is, I hope you enjoyed this. This is very funny. So turns out since you guys would both eat strawberries that don't belong to you, you guys are obviously cheaters.
Supswhoa,
Tannerwhoa,
Supswhoa whoa Relationships
Andithe straw question is not actually about strawberries. It's a survey I mean this is a super hetero, so girlfriends would ask their boyfriends and then trap them as like proof that you are cheater because you would take something that doesn't belong to you.
TannerHuh? Well, you didn't tell me that I
Supshad in my
Andipocket.
SupsYeah.
AndiWell, you're taking some, did someone else's strawberry. why are you hungering after someone else's strawberry?
SupsWhy do you think that the strawberry is someone else's property? You
AndiWell it's
TannerYeah That's
Supstrue.
Tannertrue.
AndiI mean, honestly, the heteronormativity of this whole concept is so stupid
Tannerand being monogamy and Problem There is you can't ask the strawberries if they wanna join
Andiyou. Yeah Yeah
TannerRight. They have
AndiI no autonomy The strawberries, no autonomy. Also this farmer has like thousands and thousands of strawberries
SupsAnd he cares and he cares because I took five
AndiYeah. Oh yeah. So this is the strawberry question sounds
Tannervery immature.
AndiYeah. So there's kind of a, genre of couple pranks or cheating pranks. Oh, on TikTok, which are extremely popular. And so the strawberry question is like an extension of that mm-hmm people apparently love videos of men. Being super alpha. if you get really jealous, that means that you love your girlfriend, I guess. Apparently
Tannergross.
AndiI thought it was very funny that Tanner was like no I wouldn't eat the strawberry I know you wouldn't too It's like but also what's funny is like I know he means the strawberries Yeah He literally
Supswasn't eat the strawberries I also only meant the strawberries that I would eat the strawberries and nothing else
AndiI mean, even the whole concept of like, I'm gonna catch my partner in a trap admitting he would cheat by talking about strawberries is just like, yeah, I like immature. I like it's silly, but this is extremely popular. Hashtag the strawberry question. 4.1 million views and couple pranks or cheating pranks was 4.6 billion.
TannerOh man.
Supsand I can totally believe that this exists on TikTok. Yeah
AndiYeah. So those are my four TikTok trends.
SupsWow. very cool. Before Tanner and I guess which one of these are fake, could you just repeat the four TikTok trends please?
AndiAll right. TikTok trend number one, the raw garlic challenge, TikTok trend number two, teeth, filing to trend number three, gobbling core. And TikTok trend number four, the strawberry question. One of those I made up.
TannerAll right. They all sound like TikTok would have them on there. Which of them jump out at you though?
SupsI think between two and three mm-hmm this coupling core, I mean, I don't know.
TannerSounds pretty out
SupsYeah. Yeah. I mean, it's very possible. And the fact that it has billion views, the conversation around gender and stuff, all of that sounds to be true. So I don't know. It it's difficult. Yeah.
TannerYeah you think I think if I was to just right off the bat, pick one that she would make up. Garlic. Yeah. Sounds right up her alley. One of her favorite foods. Okay. Strawberry one sounds real. To me. Sounds immature. Yeah. The Golan core also really stands out to me. It sounds like she could make that up
Supsthat's what I was thinking Okay, so I'll get a pick tooth filing
TannerOoh yeah. I really hope it's made up
Supsyeah, yeah. I also have feeling that it's Golin co
TannerOkay Yeah. I'm gonna go with Golin core. Okay. Yeah It's too good to be true because if I would do it and it's a trend can't be true.
Andiyou're just not trendy enough Yeah. So I am not sadistic enough to invent teeth filing that unfortunately happened and Coghlan core's real team Yes Yes Golan core is real. Apparently it was one of the biggest trends of like 20, 21. So I found it on lists of like wow. Best trends of 20, 21. Yeah. So the one I made up
Tannergarlic.
AndiYeah. It's but, there's a twist So raw garlic challenge. when you look that up, ONAC there's. Clear thing. It only has about a hundred thousand hits and you do see people eating raw garlic, but none of this big, like shoving clothes in your mouth and chewing, I made all of that up. Okay. But there is a garlic related TikTok trend, which is extremely popular and even. Stupider it's garlic in nose. People stuck clothes of garlic into their nose. Apparently it's supposed to relieve sinus congestion. But definitely makes it worse. And that garlic in nose had 108 million views. Wow. That was where that number came from.
TannerYou just shove a cl right up your
Andinostril. People did. And they're really, gross because the garlic irritates your sinuses and makes you make more mucus. Yeah. So there's a lot of snot it's really gross. So the real trend is worse.
TannerYeah my God. Yeah. That's so much worse.
AndiShoving it in your nose is real. Yeah. Eating it. I made that I made that.
TannerWow
Andiplease don't do that. Yeah. Don't waste garlic like this don't do that
SupsHandle and don't file your teeth or don't go taking strawberry quiz or
Andibut do Gowin core
TannerYeah
SupsGolans okay. Go for it. Yeah. I like that one
Anditoo,
Supsbut go for
Tannerit. Oh Yeah. Garlic, Yikes. I should have known.
SupsI should have known.
AndiThanks for listening to this episode of the, I should have known podcast. If you enjoyed it, please share this with someone who would enjoy it too, and maybe a major to fan in your life and as always, thanks.
TannerLike for part two
