Andi

I mean, lot. It's one of those things where it's like, is that a little, is that

Sups

that a lot? I dunno, it's not a lot.

Tanner

If you went below 20 feet, you would die. Oh God.

Sups

He didn't have to pee or poop.

Tanner

I, it doesn't

Andi

he's

Sups

pee ocean, but how? Why?

Andi

the, it's not astronaut, it's just the ocean. It's a giant

Sups

toilet.

Andi

You could

Sups

have just did the

Andi

dogs scuba dive hello and welcome to this episode of The Eye Shed of Known podcast, the trivia podcast that can't be trusted. Each week, our Quizmaster presents you with four big facts on a topic, but one of those facts is a lie. We're starting our new theme for May. We are Under the Sea. Our first Quizmaster is Tanner.

Tanner

Hello.

Andi

and he's going to be presenting us with four facts about scuba diving, but one of his facts is a lie. So join me, Andy, and our other host soups in figuring out one it is.

Tanner

I think we should dedicate this episode to two of our listeners, Wanda and Mike. They're noted scuba divers, they're big fans of the

Andi

They are.

Tanner

They've been requesting scuba diving for a

Andi

time. They really have, and they actually are patrons on rep Patreon, so

Sups

a special shout out to them. Yes, yes.

Andi

I'm afraid of what the low hanging fruit is, cuz I think I know what it might be and I don't know the

Tanner

Ooh. All right. What does SCUBA stand

Andi

Yeah, that's exactly the, that's exactly the question. I thought it

Sups

it yeah.

Andi

I think the U is underwater.

Tanner

Yes.

Andi

Breathing apparatus. so it's underwater breathing apparatus in the last three letters. Yes. That's uba. Uba, what's the

Tanner

It's hyphenated.

Sups

it's hyphenated.

Andi

Okay, so it's like a single word.

Sups

Yeah.

Andi

I think it's something like, it's like scantily clad underwater breathing.

Tanner

ever.

Andi

Oh,

Sups

you Wait, wait. I, I wanna crack. I wanna have a go at this. S C S C suspended

Andi

container

Sups

suspended container, underwater breathing

Andi

apparatus. Apparatus. Yeah.

Sups

Wow.

Tanner

Close.

Sups

No, you're not suspended. You're actually wearing it. So, Yeah.

Tanner

how else could you dive,

Andi

Like what's one of those old timey helmets? Yeah.

Tanner

And Do you know how those

Andi

work? No. You know,

Tanner

don't, they were connected to a boat via a hose. but these scuba tanks don't have a hose

Andi

connect I, so

Sups

Right.

Andi

like self-contained, underwater breathing apparatus. Nailed it.

Tanner

it.

Sups

We did

Andi

I still think scantily clad is a better

Tanner

like that a lot.

Sups

Wow.

Tanner

Scantily clad, bikini is required.

Andi

Yes. I knew that was going to be the question and I still was like, I don't know. I have no

Tanner

idea. You figured

Andi

it out We

Tanner

I love it. Nice. That was a good episode. That's a wrap. Yeah.

Andi

So

Tanner

Fact number one. Since 1967, the Professional Association of diving instructors. Has issued 29 million scuba diving certifications.

Andi

I mean, right off the bat, before he even says anything, if it were to be a lie, it'd have to be an order of magnitude. So it'd have to be like 2 million or 290 million, but Sure.

Sups

Okay. But I think 29 million sounds like a good number because I think majority of that I would credit it to Instagram because now I think people, you know, because, yeah, this has become like a hobby. Like, I'm going to this island to get my diving certification. I'm going to Thailand, or I'm

Andi

Yeah. But I feel like that was a thing way before Instagram. Yeah. I lived on an island where people did scuba certifications all the time. Like this was pre-Instagram and he's talking about the sixties. Mm-hmm. Though it does seem like a pretty big number. I guess when you're talking about over 60 years mm-hmm. that's what, 500,000 people per year? Yeah. That's a lot. seems high. getting their certification.

Tanner

Now it's over a million a year.

Sups

Yeah.

Andi

That seems too

Sups

high. Yeah. Hmm. What else could you tell

Andi

us about

Sups

it,

Tanner

Yeah. Patty or the Professional Association of Diving instructors? began in 1967 because there was really no official certification. And it operates in over 180 countries around the world. They have specific dive centers with big pools that you can learn in, and certification takes about a week. Mm-hmm. and certification lasts a lifetime. right? Yeah. exactly. So there's open water. Yeah. Which just means you can scuba dive and then there's advanced open water.

Sups

So it's very similar to like the wine Yeah, sommelier. Like the W S A T, like level one, level two. Like how do your wine courses,

Andi

Sure.

Tanner

Yeah. You

Sups

Certified.

Andi

No idea what you're talking about. Yeah. yeah. But the difference is anybody can just drink wine whether they're certified or

Sups

Mm.

Andi

so, I still think the number seems 29 million. Really

Sups

Really high. Mm-hmm. do you think it's high in the range of like, you think it's like 2 million, 3 million, what range are you thinking?

Andi

even 500,000 sounds high because, okay, it's lifetime, right? So that means we have to have every year on average 500,000 new people. Right? That's the population of like a whole city. Every year. That is so many people. I don't think that

Sups

That many people or

Andi

dude, I know it's worldwide. Yeah, of course. You know, I would believe 29 million people have dived.

Sups

Okay. didn't you just say that now it's actually 1 million per year average people are getting

Andi

that's. That's a lot. Okay. And that wouldn't take very long before you'd have like a huge population where like the whole planet Yeah, Exactly. Yes, exactly. And like you would like, you would know

Sups

Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Andi

Well, I have to hear more, but I'm like, I'm

Sups

I'm

Andi

like very skeptical. Yeah. I would not take that oxygen tank full of with that. fat to down under water with me.

Sups

Okay,

Tanner

perfect. Let's talk about oxygen tanks. Fact number two. you're welcome. The gas in recreational scuba diving tanks is 21% oxygen.

Andi

like the atmosphere, just

Tanner

like the air we

Sups

Yeah. Okay.

Andi

Okay. Alright. Backed over. Fact number three.

Sups

So there's also mix of other gases.

Tanner

Yeah.

Sups

What other gases are there? Nitrogen. Okay. So it's like

Andi

atmosphere. Okay. So couple things. One this would again be an easy place to lie cuz you just say like, it's the same as the atmosphere. Mm-hmm. So I think one of the things about this as weird is if we didn't think of oxygen tanks, like for people with health issues Mm-hmm.

Sups

The ones in hospitals are almost pure

Andi

Right. That's what I'm saying. So I guess maybe he's playing on that. Like it's called an oxygen tank. But why isn't

Sups

it mostly These oxygen tanks are not different.

Andi

I think they're different. probably we call them oxygen tanks, but from what Tanner's saying, it's actually just compressed air. You're

Tanner

Yeah, If you went diving with the tanks that they have in hospitals, you explode. If you went below 20 feet, you would die. Oh God. Because you would absorb more oxygen than your body can

Sups

handle Just the

Tanner

change. So you could dive with pure oxygen, but if you went below about 20 feet, You get sick.

Sups

Okay. too much oxygen is not good for me. Exactly. Oh

Tanner

yeah. It's toxic at high percentages.

Andi

So it's just, it's actually compressed air. right? Which I guess kind of makes sense. Our lungs and our bodies are perfectly adapted to breathing atmosphere,

Sups

and you are breathing out carbon dioxide underwater.

Tanner

Yeah. So there's really two kinds of scuba. There's one where the air goes into the water. Okay. And there's one where you rebreathe it, so it filters the carbon dioxide and you breathe the air back in. But mostly you let out bubbles. Yeah, That's CO2

Sups

one, that's the, yeah. Okay.

Andi

Okay. I mean, yeah, this fact doesn't sound sketchy to me other than we call them oxygen

Sups

Right.

Andi

so then shouldn't

Sups

they That's where the name is. Okay.

Andi

But like misnomers are a thing

Sups

All right.

Andi

I know that like oh two is volatile, so like so it would make sense that you don't wanna bring it underwater mm-hmm.

Tanner

Fact number three. The deepest scuba dive was over 1000 feet or 304 meters.

Andi

I mean, lot. It's one of those things where it's like, is that a little, is that

Sups

that a lot? I dunno, it's not a lot. 304 meters. Like if you're talking deep and that's not recreational

Andi

I would think that, yeah, like a thousand feet, 300 meters. I mean, you would have. Pretty significant things happening

Sups

to your body.

Tanner

The record is held by Ahmed Gober from Egypt. Okay. Who dived 332.35 meters or 1,090 feet in the Red Sea. In Hab, Egypt. Okay. In 2014, it took about a decade of preparation. the dissent took about 15 minutes. The ascent took 13 and a half hours. Mm.

Andi

Wow. Because it messes with you so bad.

Tanner

Fine. Yeah. Because he had to slowly ascend to make sure that he didn't get the bends

Andi

have been so hungry. I can't go like two hours without eating. you

Tanner

could

Sups

You

Tanner

underwater,

Sups

but How,

Andi

why

Sups

He didn't have to pee or poop.

Tanner

I, it doesn't

Andi

he's

Sups

pee ocean, but how? Yeah, I'm I'm trying to think of the logistics. Yeah. Okay. In a separate pouch or in

Andi

the, it's not astronaut, it's just the ocean. It's a giant

Sups

toilet. Yeah. But you're gonna be still swimming in that?

Andi

Yeah.

Sups

Okay. Mm-hmm. ocean. Yeah. Okay. I think this checks out only for the fact that I know that Egypt is big on diving. Yeah. It's a very big thing. Like Squash and diving are like, for some reason very big in this country. So This diver is from Egypt. I want to believe that this is true.

Tanner

Mm-hmm. so after 10 meters of depth, pressure has increased. Another atmosphere,

Andi

Uhhuh, it's basically doubled.

Tanner

right? So 10 meters, it doubled he went 330

Andi

Right. Did he have to wear a special thing? I mean, imagine it's cold, so he'd have to cover his whole

Tanner

Super cold. the photos just showed him in a wetsuit. Mm-hmm. But he had a whole team of technicians and divers and medical support team already for him. Wow.

Andi

Wow.

Sups

was he in contact with other people when he was doing this type?

Tanner

I don't know. I think he probably had a

Sups

That's also pretty cool that radio can work so deep under Yeah,

Tanner

The, the Red Sea is almost 10,000 feet deep. He went a thousand

Andi

So he's only going like a 10th of the ocean. Yeah, but still like we're talking about the human body. Yeah. Like it's not a submersible like a machine. This is his. Body, there's not really much between him and the ocean. So, yeah, I mean, it's impressive. the only lie, I could think it would be like somehow magically This was free diving and that scuba can go way deeper, but like, I don't

Sups

know. Okay. You know what

Andi

I mean? Because like how is, how is this a lot? Yeah. In technical or, or No, it's some other guy in some other place, but I don't know why he would think we would know that. Yeah. So I feel like we have to believe

Sups

Yeah. off the tree so far, I think I believe this

Andi

one. Yeah. This The most. believable,

Tanner

All right, so that was the deepest human scuba dive. Fact number four, the deepest scuba dive by a dog. Was 130 feet or 40 meters.

Sups

Why? Why? Why? One question. Why?

Andi

You could

Sups

have just did the

Andi

dogs scuba dive and I would've been

Sups

we'd have a debate. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Now we have to go back to the basics. Yeah.

Andi

I

Sups

know that dogs actually scuba dived.

Andi

dogs can scuba dive things I learned today that's way more interesting than any of the other things.

Sups

What kind of dog

Tanner

It was a Labrador retriever mix.

Andi

Naturally. Okay. So This's gotta be American then, because that's the most American dog

Tanner

ever. Yeah. Is American in the Cayman Islands.

Sups

Okay, sure.

Andi

What's the dog's name?

Sups

All right. So shadow, she went,

Andi

how did they make a little doggy tank? They made a little doggy mask. is this ethical? Like you can't explain to a dog what it's about to happen to it.

Tanner

That is exactly my issue with it.

Sups

with it. Yeah. Yeah. And how does the dog know that it has to like, go down, come up, Like you know

Andi

doesn't know what you're doing to it

Sups

Was it guided? Was there rather human

Tanner

being? Yeah. So the owner, he loves to dive. Okay. He dives all the time. Okay. And Shadow kept trying to join him when he would dive. And so he's like, I really wanna bring shadow with me. How can I bring her scuba diving? So he made a plastic globe helmet? Correct. That goes over her head So her helmet is connected to his tank with a hose. Mm-hmm. So technically it's not self-contained, you know, but so Yeah, exactly. Yeah. She only goes with him. Yeah. And she's dived over 30 times. he says that she wants to do it and it's on her free will. But Dogs can't really consent. They can't tell you if they run out of oxygen. They can't say, I don't want to be down here anymore.

Sups

Are there like dog specific signs? Did she,

Andi

Hey look, there's

Sups

a

Tanner

shark right here.

Andi

Yeah. Yeah. yeah. I guess she could probably bark within her little helmet. Yeah. Yeah. full of compressed air, not oxygen.

Tanner

that's

Andi

Apparently.

Tanner

Yeah.

Sups

Wow. Okay. Shadow.

Andi

Shadow the dog.

Tanner

Yep.

Andi

Wow. do we believe this isn't, you know, Tanner made up an entire idea. He's like, what do I lie about? A dog that I think,

Sups

well I think, you know, it's not outlandish to think of if a dog can go to the space.

Andi

Exactly. A Yeah, the

Sups

as well.

Andi

I think what people forget is that dog didn't come back

Sups

Right, right.

Andi

from space like it. Yeah. She

Sups

She died. She died.

Andi

Yeah. Yeah. She went up there and died. That is true. Everyone's like, oh, this hero. She died, you guys, she didn't make it back alive.

Sups

Yeah.

Andi

So like that's a bad

Sups

Okay. Sorry. But, but you know the context, if it can

Andi

can go up, it

Sups

go down,

Andi

Sure. Yeah. I mean, it seems really cute. Like I could get behind, it's like, oh yeah, you're, a puppy wants to come with you. That's cute. How deep was it again?

Tanner

130 feet or 40 meters.

Sups

Okay.

Andi

So like That's quite a lot. Yeah. I mean, we know dogs can swim, So like realistically they can probably dive a little bit themselves. Mm-hmm. But that seems a little. Weird that she like, okay, she likes to dive, but detainer make that up. I really doubt it. That'd be pretty ridiculous. Yeah, I'd be pretty impressed if he's like, yeah, I made that up. I feel like if Tanner were to make it up, it would've been a cuter name. for a scuba diving dog. so those were some seriously cool

Sups

underwater

Andi

breathing apparatus. Anyway, Those are some interesting facts about scuba diving that you just told us, but one of them is a lie, so can you please repeat the four facts and then we will take our guests at which one it is.

Tanner

okay? Fact number one. Since 1967, the Professional Association of diving instructors has issued 29 million scuba diving certifications. Fact number two, the gas in recreational scuba diving tanks is 21% oxygen fact number three, the deepest scuba dive was over 1000 feet or 300 meters. Fact number four, the deepest scuba dive by a dog was 130 feet or 40 meters. One of those is a lie. If you need to come up for air, that's okay.

Andi

I'm gonna change the meter on your tanks

Tanner

oh, no,

Andi

actually run

Tanner

no.

Sups

make it 25%.

Tanner

Oh, no.

Andi

All right. So which one is the lot? So I think I'm gonna stick with number one. Yeah. Because I just think that number sounds wrong. Mm-hmm. that's a shockingly high number I think. I mean, yeah, it is over 60 years, but like it's, Yeah. Yeah. yeah. The thing about the compressed air versus oxygen, I mean, I could just be wrong. We could just be wrong about that. And that would just be like a, that's like a very, like black and white. like, nope, you should have known. And then I would be like, yeah, I should have, but okay. Mm-hmm. the deepest dive, I think that also there could be a lie there. Yep. But I don't

Sups

think so. Mm-hmm. So,

Andi

and I'm not gonna touch shadow.

Sups

shadow. yeah. So we, we leave Shadow Out Tree is the one that I believe the most. It's between one and two. You're going with one, which I also think is the light, but I think I'll pick two because I think maybe it's not like a direct replica of the atmosphere in the tank. Maybe there is like something, because you're underwater, there is like some sort of adjustment.

Andi

All right. I think she's compressed. air

Sups

Yeah.

Andi

I'm gonna go with number one, but I do think number three could be hiding

Sups

some. Okay.

Andi

Okay.

Sups

I'm gonna go with number two.

Tanner

Number one and number two. Okay.

Andi

Yeah, we kind of also did number three. We're guessing the first

Sups

three apparently.

Tanner

All right. The lie is shadow, yes. Fact number four. The deepest scuba dive by a dog was 13 feet or four meters.

Andi

Oh, but it, That's so it was the way, I thought number three

Sups

the live kinda

Tanner

reverse Yes. like,

Andi

She doesn't go that far down.

Tanner

Exactly.

Sups

Yeah. Like 40 meters is a lot.

Andi

I guess I just really didn't even like consider the depth. I was just like, whatever. Like that's not gonna be the library, because Yeah, when didn't really start talking about depths, They start to just kind of be a

Sups

lot. but Hang on. 29 million is true.

Tanner

true. That

Andi

That is insane. That's A lot of people.

Tanner

Yeah. It's so many people? Well, there's over 6,000 diving centers run by Patty around the world, So many people are getting certified.

Andi

you rich able-bodied people doing this

Tanner

that. Yeah. But If you got certified your license to about 18 meter depth and the maximum for recreational is about 40 meters. So shadows definitely not going that deep. She only goes about four meters.

Andi

Okay. Little baby dog. also think like, how deep could a dog naturally dive? what was it,

Sups

feet. 13. 13.

Andi

Could a dog just do that on its own? Maybe Yeah. I, guess I'm just kinda like, if you think about like a 13 foot pool That's not even that deep of a pool. I guess if she hated it, she could very easily just go back

Tanner

up. Yeah, exactly. yeah,

Sups

she feel,

Andi

so I should have. known.

Sups

I should have known.

Andi

Thanks for listening to this episode of the I Should Have Known podcast. We'll be continuing our under the sea theme for the rest of the month, and as always, thanks. Like when James Bond is like, harpooning dudes underwater.
