Tanner

babies sleep for up to like 18 hours a

Andi

Mm-hmm. .Yeah. But never when you want them to

Sups

Yes, exactly.

Andi

I mean, of course you have a nipple in your mouth. fact. Yes, I knew it. I knew there'd be a poop fact.

Sups

Yeah. It looked like weird. Like a kryptonite

Tanner

or yeah,

Andi

it's so wild. But it has to be true. Cuz I can't imagine Tanner made that up. Hello, and welcome to this episode of the Aha Heaven podcast, the trivia podcast that can't be trusted. Each week, our Quizmaster presents you with four big facts on a topic, but one of those facts is a lie, and we're doing all things new for this new year, and we're continuing that theme with our Quizmaster Tanner.

Tanner

Hello.

Andi

And today he's going to be presenting us with four facts about newborns. But one of his facts, is not true. So join me, Andy, and our other host soups in figuring out which one is the lie.

Tanner

Okay. Newborns, A baby that's just been Born within the last month or. But our low hanging fruit is about pregnancy. How long is pregnancy in humans?

Andi

Wow. Wow. Okay. We got really low. This one's really, really Like is there a trick to

Sups

I dunno. I don't wanna say

Andi

anything. So we're talking about on average, I

Tanner

Yeah. Yeah. What's the standard number they

Andi

say? yeah. So nine months or 40 weeks.

Tanner

That's right. Or 280 days or 10 lunar months. Yeah. So

Andi

it's like 10 periods, like I like to measure my period using the. because like a calendar month is too long. Mm-hmm. but the moon cycle is about the right length, so it's very useful.

Tanner

So after that time, you give birth to a baby and it's a newborn for about a month or two. Okay. And newborns are very strange when you talk about like human anatomy and physiology.

Andi

they really ought to still be in there, Like they're basically still fetuses,

Sups

but

Tanner

so resilient and they really bounce back in a lot of ways. You know, like they're much more resilient than like an egg. You know, people treat them like they are

Andi

yeah. So soups, do you wanna know something about American health class? And legend. Let me see how weird you think this is. Okay, so in middle school, in order to, teach us about parenthood, cuz that's something 13 year olds need to learn. Yeah. we had this project where we had to take care of an egg baby. So like we had an egg

Sups

Okay. And how well did you do?

Andi

Um, Tanner failed. I remember very famously So like, you had to, you had to carry it around with you everywhere at school for a week. and I actually got unlucky. I actually had twins. And I remember in middle school when Tanner killed his egg baby,

Tanner

I had like a binocular case around my neck and it could just sit in there, nice cozy little baby carrier. And I leaned over in my desk and splat landed right in the ground,

Andi

like in the middle of class. It was excellent. It was absolutely

Sups

Wow. Oh, sorry guys. I mean, America has a lot of weird

Tanner

things.

Sups

but this is, I know what it taught me.

Tanner

I can't raise an egg

Andi

anyway, so newborns are stronger than eggs, I

Tanner

Hope. Yes. All right. Fact number one Newborns should not drink water

Andi

Okay, that makes sense. They drink milk

Sups

I get that.

Tanner

That's exactly right. Or formula.

Andi

Yeah. So this. Seems very obvious, which is always kind of scary with big facts, but like milk has water in it. and formula literally you use by mixing with water. so I would imagine that the idea is that all of their hydration just comes from that, but the whole, they shouldn't. This sounds very strange. Why shouldn't newborns have water?

Tanner

so newborns and even beyond the newborn stage up to six months. If you give them water instead of breast milk or formula, then they're not getting the right salts. and basically their kidneys can't filter as well as ours can. So if you're filling up their tiny, tiny stomachs with a lot of water, you're depriving them of salts and nutrients that they get from breast milk, and then their kidneys can't filter it as well. So then they get what's called failure to thrive. So they're kind of starving. I have failure

Sups

a tribe. Ftt.

Andi

right? Is that like languishing? Yeah.

Tanner

Failure

Andi

to Thrive. Okay. And basically they need to faster than they can just pee out of the water and get more food.

Tanner

That's right. Yeah.

Andi

That's trick. See See that sounds unbelievable to me. I guess I could see some very like crunchy ideas or like people who are very in fitness who are very serious and they're like, I need to drink a lot of water. I'm dehydrated. Mm-hmm. maybe my baby is, I should give my baby water or something, but maybe someone somewhere would think that. Yeah.

Tanner

It's also an issue making the formula, so you have to mix it with water, so if you water down the formula so that you can stretch it out longer, maybe because there's not enough formula on the shelves.

Andi

Ooh. See that is important. Yeah.

Sups

Right?

Andi

Okay, so I mean, so far yeah,

Sups

I, I can't believe that, I mean, I don't have a baby of my own, but a lot of people do around me, so I got

Andi

well, apparently don't do this as an experiment. You know, don't, don't test this on any

Sups

No, Okay.

Andi

When can, you said six

Tanner

months. After six months, it's not gonna ruin things.

Andi

right? There's stomachs that have grown,

Tanner

Yeah, Because newborns, their stomach is the size of a marble.

Sups

Right?

Andi

It's so small. They're so little,

Sups

Ah. That's why they're pooping a lot cuz they

Andi

But no, my thing is like how do they make so much more poop? than goes in? I don't understand. How do they do this? I hope you have a poop fact. fact. Yes, I knew it. I knew there'd be a poop fact.

Tanner

and

Sups

right. Course Let me drink some

Tanner

some water.

Andi

I know I keep drinking water. Like, screw you babies. Watch me do

Sups

Yeah. Okay,

Tanner

All right. for

Sups

two,

Tanner

Fact number two, a, newborn's first poop does not stink.

Sups

I'm trying to think. Because when my nephew was born, he pooped straight away like, I mean, after like an hour or so and it was green color.

Andi

Oh yeah.

Sups

I'm, Yeah. exactly. yes. And I cleaned it. I was like, you should

Andi

remember You're

Sups

uncle, uncle, trying to remember. No, actually it didn't stink.

Tanner

Surprising since it was green. Right.

Sups

Yeah.

Andi

Mc meconium is like a special kind of disgusting though.

Sups

Yeah. Yeah. It looked like weird. Like a kryptonite

Tanner

or yeah,

Andi

Yeah. yeah. meconium. Yeah. It's the, the special name for the, poop before it's made out. Food that they ingest through their mouths.

Tanner

So when they're in the placenta, they're ingesting a lot of, skin cells and everything that the mother is eating, but also all the fluid and everything that's floating around with them. And so this is technically their first poop, Okay.

Sups

So it's Right.

Tanner

And it's very sticky. can be as dark as black, and sometimes they come out covered in.

Andi

they poop all over

Tanner

Yeah. If they have a very difficult birth. But the key here is that it has very little odor.

Andi

Because they have no bacteria. have no bacteria. Oh, that makes sense.

Tanner

So the reason our poop stinks,

Sups

Tanner, I Unicorns,

Andi

Yeah, yeah. I dunno what you're talking about.

Sups

so lack of

Tanner

Yes. And it Yes. so in our stomachs, there's a whole colony of bacteria that's helping to break down our.

Andi

Yeah. And then their poop is like stinky gases. Yes. And then we poop out there stinky gases.

Tanner

Yes.

Sups

So it's all like connection, chain

Andi

Poop inception, yeah.

Tanner

But this colonization of our gut by bacteria doesn't start until birth. Yeah. So in the birth canal, the newborns are getting bacteria that will make their poop

Andi

stink. Uhhuh, So they haven't worked on it. So meconium doesn't stink. You mean it doesn't stink like our poop?

Tanner

I mean, yeah. Like it probably it has a scent. Sure it

Sups

have a scent,

Tanner

it doesn't smell like poop.

Sups

yeah. It wasn't like, oh my, I can't stand this. Like, you

Andi

Okay. Eventually the poops do smell

Sups

Oh

Tanner

Oh after, sure. After just a couple days, Yeah. I

Andi

it's like, oh man. Okay. this makes sense. It's very unbelievable though. I mean, really, like we're talking about babies and we're talking about excrement. Mm-hmm. you're trying to tell me that doesn't stink

Sups

I mean, only the first one. Right. Bigger. Yeah. So that's what, Right.

Andi

I mean,

Sups

Yeah. Sure, sure.

Tanner

let's move on to fact number three. Sleeping newborns should not be woken up.

Andi

Okay.

Sups

Okay. dogs?

Tanner

kind of like

Andi

Let's sleeping. Let's sleeping. dogs. lie. Yeah. Different. They won't

Tanner

won't bite you They won't bite you.

Sups

Yeah. Yeah, yeah. it takes forever for them to fall asleep. Who in the right mind wants to wake them up? They just stop crying now. Just, you know but why?

Tanner

their little baby brains are processing so much information every single day, every single hour, that they need the sleep to properly develop their brain.

Andi

Right.

Tanner

these neurons can only grow when they're sleep. if you interrupt that to feed them or to play with them, that's a bad idea.

Andi

Yeah. I mean really it's kind of a bad a day to wake anybody up, .If someone is sleeping it's cuz they need to be asleep.

Tanner

Right. But babies sleep for up to like 18 hours a

Andi

Mm-hmm. .Yeah. But never when you want them to

Sups

Yes, exactly. Yeah. Yeah. That 18 hour is not

Andi

Yeah. Your fixed they also eat every like two

Sups

Yeah. Yeah.

Andi

Okay. I feel skeptical about this because. Well, I feel like on one hand it's gonna make a lot of like new parents look really bad. Because I think a lot of people, you know, they try to train their baby to sleep in a way that is beneficial to an adult's waking schedule. Right? You want them to sleep at night So that seems kind of like.

Sups

way mm-hmm.

Andi

to be like, oh, you shouldn't be waking your baby. I feel like people would be more didactic about that if this was real, actual. I mean, I definitely could agree with the idea that like, you really shouldn't, but it's not the end of the

Sups

exactly, And I have. seen, Mothers like, even while the baby is sleeping, if it's like time to feed, like just to maintain that clock, So yeah. I don't know how I feel about, maybe there is like a medical argument to it, but

Andi

Yeah. See, I, know. I don't like this one. Hang

Sups

Yeah. all, of all the three that we've heard so

Andi

far. Okay. I have to hear another one.

Tanner

All right. Moving on to fact number four. Newborns can swallow and breathe at the same.

Andi

Wait, what? Wait, how? It's

Sups

I have an important question. Can Adults? swallow and breathe at the same time? No. Yeah, that's what I was just trying to do, and I was like, no, you can't.

Tanner

you might die. Don't try this.

Andi

Bye. P?

Tanner

That's how you drown

Sups

Okay.

Andi

I just realized the obvious. reason is how else are they going to breastfeed? You got a nipple in your mouth. Yeah. They still need to breathe. They don't take it out, take a breath and then go

Sups

back

Andi

in. Right.

Tanner

Right.

Andi

it's continuous sounds.

Sups

Sounds so logical.

Tanner

newborns also breastfeed for like 20 to 45 minutes. So they can breathe while they're doing this, but what they give up is the ability to talk.

Sups

Mm.

Andi

Well, yeah. I mean, of course you have a nipple in your mouth.

Tanner

No. But could adults do this? Sure. But then they wouldn't be able to.

Andi

Oh, you mean at all in general? At all? Not just when they have the nipple in their

Tanner

If you can swallow and breathe, you cannot talk.

Sups

Okay. So it's one or the other. Yes. Okay. Yes. And because babies don't talk and they're constantly on the boob. Yeah. So, okay.

Tanner

That's right.

Andi

So, What I know about, the complicated mechanism that is the human throat. There's a little flappy do that's like,

Tanner

Yes, sure.

Sups

Gladys.

Andi

Yes, but I'm trying to explain it. Okay. It's a little like piece of tissue that blocks off your airway when you got food. And so then, you know, and that's what happens when you kind of mess that up, then that's why you start coughing. Cuz you're choking, but you need the air in order to talk. So that's why don't talk while you're eating. this is why, right? you have to move the air past your larynx so that you can speak, right?

Tanner

So the larynx is higher in newborns. Mm-hmm. So they can breathe through their nose the whole time.

Andi

So when you're growing, your larynx

Tanner

It drops.

Andi

my God, that's

Tanner

So before they're six months old, their larynx drops down and then they can't swallow and breathe at the

Andi

See? See? never learned any of that because when I studied language development, it's always at the point where they can start talking So it's like, you know what, what happened before? Like we, the larynx had to move. That's wild.

Sups

Okay. So scientific,

Andi

Yeah. But do you really buy that though,

Sups

well, I tried to swallow and breathe at the same time. It didn't really

Tanner

newborns would be excellent. Chuggers. Yeah.

Andi

but, but they're teeny tiny

Tanner

That's true. Talk about this.

Andi

this. You would've

Tanner

be the size of a marble, but they could chug

Sups

it Chugging. Yeah.

Tanner

Yeah. They

Andi

do, um, keg stands.

Sups

very interesting.

Andi

Yeah. Babies, newborns, Wow. Yeah, newborns are amazing. those were very interesting facts, but we have to figure out which one is the lie. So can you please repeat them and then soups and I will take our guesses. Alright,

Tanner

All right. Fact number one, newborns should not drink water Fact number. two, a newborn's first poop does not stink. Fact number three, sleeping newborns should not be woken. In fact, number four. newborns can swallow and breathe at the same time. One of those is a

Andi

I feel like it's probably number three.

Sups

Mm-hmm.

Andi

just because the other ones make sense.

Sups

Yes.

Andi

and number three, it seems mean almost to be like, oh, you woke up your baby, you shouldn't do that. Yeah. Like I definitely think do it as little as possible, right. But like, you can like, you can wake up your baby. And I would imagine for like really little ones, you have to spread out their feedings. It's not like you can just give them a bunch of milk at once and then they don't need to eat for like several hours. they could be still sleeping through their hunger. I do that sometimes. I take a nap when I'm hungry, so I don't have to eat. So I would think then like you should wake up the baby to feed it,

Sups

Yeah, hundred percent. And faulty remaining three facts. I think having, experienced them No, my child, but children around me and I also think it's fact number three and I'm trying to really think if the first poop was super stinky or not, but I have a few.

Andi

unbelievable. Yeah. But also

Sups

like it's bacteria that makes sense.

Andi

and they shouldn't drink water. That's also kind of surprising. mean, it's but it makes sense.

Sups

sense.

Andi

Honestly, the last one is so unbelievable. It has to be true

Sups

Right?

Andi

Like, you know, it's so wild. But it has to be true. Cuz I can't imagine Tanner made that up. that's too wild.

Sups

Yeah. I'm also gonna pick number three.

Andi

Yeah. I think there's a catch to it that was like, you should have known this catch. We're Putting all of our egg babies in one basket.

Sups

see if it cracks or

Tanner

Well, your egg baby this time has survived. Yes. You didn't baby Every Yes. Fact number three is the lie. This is actually a misconception that a lot of people have. They say never wake a sleeping baby. this is totally fake. You should not wake a sleeping baby just to change them or just to play with them or just to hold them. But sleeping babies should be woken up every like three to four hours in order to feed, because feeding is much more important than sleeping. And they have such a small stomach that they've worked through all their food in three hours. this whole conversation about like forcing a sleep schedule on them, that doesn't really work for babies until after like six weeks up to three months. Mm-hmm. So even if you try to be like, sleep now, it's nighttime. I'm not gonna feed you until the day that won't

Andi

work. They don't care. They're I will scream,

Tanner

will scream, feed me. Yeah. So

Sups

at 3:00 AM 5:00 AM

Andi

then every 7:00 AM every three hours. Yeah, exactly. Which is why we force parents to live and work an. Schedule cuz you can't change that. Newborns are how they are, but we can change what we expect out of adults who are taking care of

Sups

Absolutely. Yeah.

Tanner

Yeah. So it's totally okay and actually you should wake your baby up in order to feed it

Andi

Okay. Yeah. That makes sense. We're such good

Tanner

Very good job.

Sups

I mean,

Andi

Wow. I

Tanner

have known that You guys are experts on

Andi

Yeah, you should have known yeah. I should have known.

Sups

I should have known.

Andi

Thanks for listening to this episode of the I Should Have Known podcast. We'll be continuing with our new theme for the rest of the month. And as always, thanks for listening

Sups

forgive me father, for I have pooped
