Oh, wow. It just has that as a superpower.
AndiNice. Why did it need to be a chimp? Is Nick Fury a Samuel Jas? Yes. Okay, good. She gets radioactive juice, spilled all over her, and you guys can't even name what she's good at, man thing sounds very not
Supsappropriate
TannerI think they just ran out of names.
AndiWait, what there? He has two reasons to be weird Hello and welcome to this episode of the I Should Have Known podcast, the trivia podcast that can't be trusted. Each week our Quizmaster presents you with four big facts on a topic, but one of those facts is a lie, and we're starting a new themed for this month. We are doing nerd, so we're nerding out. and our first quizmaster for the month is soups. Hey, and soups is doing a find the fake episode on Marvel superheroes. So he will present us with four superheroes, from Marvel's extended universe, the comic books, movies, everything but one of his heroes is not a Marvel superhero, so it is fake. So join me, Andy, and another host Tanner in figuring out which one it is.
SupsOkay, so we are gonna be talking about four superheroes, but before we get going here's the low hanging fruit Which phase of the Marvel Cinematic universe are we in right now?
TannerOkay.
AndiThis is not low in the least. I am just discovering that there are
Tannerphases
Andiso, I'm gonna guess five.
SupsWe are in phase
Tannerfive. Five. Okay.
SupsSo phase five is 2003, 2024. And phase six is 24, 25.
Andiokay.
SupsYeah. So yeah, yeah. they announced the whole during Comicon, couple of years back. And so In phase five you will have guardians of the Galaxy Volume three. Daredevil captain America New World Order And Antman and the Wasp
TannerQuantum Mania.
AndiI am not nerdy about this at all, so here we are. It's kind of a weird thing, like as a theme too, like what is nerdy nowadays because like definitely being into comics, I think it's still pretty nerdy. but like liking superheroes is no longer nerdy. Right? Yeah. But like I am old enough to remember when these movies came out and it did feel like this fun thing But now that it's so mainstream that it just kind of doesn't mean as much
Tanneranymore.
SupsThat's true. So today we are going to be talking about slightly obscure Marvel superheroes, but they were very popular in the comic Alright. Superhero number one, death AKA Mistress Death or Lady Death.
TannerOoh.
AndiOkay,
TannerLady Death.
SupsMarvel describes death. as, the embodiment of the end of all things, death holds dominion over all living beings while maintaining a tight crip on the keys to immortality.
TannerHmm.
SupsSo death is basically a cosmic entity who possesses night omnipotent powers. Wow.
TannerWow. So even more than a superhero.
Andilike a God
SupsShe was In love with Deadpool, yeah, with whom she crosses paths repeatedly, after his numerous near death experiences. Yeah.
TannerRight? Yeah. He would be very intimately acquainted with death.
SupsYes, yes. but you know who was in love with death Teos. So Teos sought after the Infinity Stones, not to gain power, but to win death's, affection and approval.
TannerHuh? Okay.
SupsBut this is in the comics, right? In the movie it's slightly different. Yeah.
TannerMm-hmm.
AndiSo as a person who knows very little about any of this stuff, but what I do know about is Greek mythology, and I know that like Marvel uses certainly Norse mythology. That's a whole huge
TannerYeah.
AndiArea. I see here that we have. Some Greek
TannerMm-hmm.
Andiand I'm pretty sure Thanos is a Greek God or like that name comes from
TannerYeah. Greek thanatos
AndiYeah, Right. Yeah. I feel like that's clearly inspired by that. So that makes it seem more realistic to me. But at the same time, if y'all were to make up a hero Oh.
TannerDeath death,
Supsso creative, right?
AndiI mean, right. Like, it's like, it's not really a hero, it's a cosmic entity. and it represents death. Or like, If I were soups and knowing who his co-hosts are, you know what I would do? I'd be like, I'm gonna use a Hindu God Oh no.
TannerGotcha.
Andilike, they're not gonna know. pretty much every religion and mythos has some kind of god of death. Right, right.
Tannerthat's a pretty solid plan. Yeah.
Andialso at the same time, it seems very realistic that someone at Marvel would think the same thing. So like, this is tricky, right? I have to hear more. Okay.
Supsthen let's move on to superhero number two. Bobo aka Detective Chimp.
AndiHow did I know it was going to be an
TannerA
Andiwhen it was just called Bobo? I was like, oh, Bobo. Definitely an ape. A
Supshundred. percent chimp, with a human level intellect, and can speak and write all languages known to mankind.
TannerOh, wow. It just has that as a superpower.
AndiNice. Why did it need to be a chimp? you could have just been linguist
Supsplan person. So Detective Chimp first made his debut during the Golden Age of Comics. So Golden Age of Comics takes place between 1938 and 1955
Andithis yeah. Back when like, superheroes were like rallying actual
Tanneryeah. Super superman versus the
AndiNazis Yeah. Right. Like
SupsAnd their popularity increased exponentially. So detective Chimp was part of that golden era, right? So Bobo used to be a part of a circus where he did tricks on the audience and he accidentally drank a potion. Called Fountain of Youth and gained his intellectual powers. He was basically a normal chimpanzee in Africa and was taken there to be a part of the circus. Bobo has a history of alcohol and tobacco. Abuse.
AndiI also love that, like, I'm a chimp and I can speak all languages. So my job is to be a detective I assume he wears a trench coat. I'm gonna,
TannerAnd a hat fedora.
Supshas, he has the hat. Sherlock Holmes look was actually inspired from this
AndiOh, okay. Bobo, call me
Supsit.
TannerOh wow.
Supsand what else
Andidoes he ever team up with? Yeah. Who does he team up
Supsup with? So he teams up with Captain Marvel. Um, There is also a mention of him teaming up with Captain America, but Bobo is actually a part of, the Bureau of Amplified Animals. So, which is like these animals who have these human-like power,
AndiI just like want him to do like the forties, like detective talk, like smoking a cigarette and be like, Hey doll, come on over. I need to ask you some. C
SupsWell, he has, he has a history of alcohol and tobacco.
Andithey all did
TannerIt sounds like a really good like noir
AndiYes. Exactly. Yeah,
Tannerparody. A parody noir movie. That's
Andiwanna see. Yeah. Yeah. But he is a chimp the whole time. He's
Tannera chimp.
Andiso I can see this one as being a real Marvel one, because I feel like the time period is talking about, I imagine at that time, when. Rich people were like, yeah, oh, comics are a thing. And they were like, throw literally everything at it and see what sticks. So like Talking Chimp Detective. Sure. He could've just been a thing for a few years.
Tannerpretty believable, but pretty easy to make up. I think
Andione.
SupsAll right. Superhero number three, Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones is from Queens. She went to Midtown High School, along with Peter Parker, they had quite a few classes together and Jessica had a crush on Peter, Jessica got her powers in a car accident. Her dad used to work for Stark Industries,
TannerAh.
AndiMm.
Supsso he got a free ticket for his family to go visit Disney World and when they were coming back, the car
Andithe merger with Disney buying
SupsYeah.
TannerRight. Yeah.
SupsSo when they were coming back the car collided with the truck. carrying
Andiafter. Oh. but she did get to go to Disney World first. Okay. It's a less
Supscoming, yeah. Yeah. Let's start. They were coming back and so of course the entire family died. She was the only survivor. She was in coma. She was then taken up by, adoptive parents. She's, also a detective, she can jump, like
Tannershe's
Supsstrong. Martial martial arts, kind
Tannerof yeah. thing. See, there's a show on Netflix about Jessica Jones and she, yeah, she's wearing like a leather coat. She's like on the streets. So I think she's like Nick Fury, where she's not super powered. Yeah. But she has super fast reflexes and strength and speed, right?
AndiIs Nick Fury a Samuel Jas? Yes. Okay, good. Okay.
SupsYes. And Jessica, at least in the comic books married Luke Cage.
TannerYes. Also a, comic? Super strong fighter guy,
Supsyes. Who is Bulletproof? That's a superpower yeah. That's Jessica
TannerMm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
AndiWow. the way Tanner is just like nodding as if he knows. This one makes me think this one must be
Supsreal, Okay. ,,Sure.
TannerWell, that's where it's tricky though. I know she exists. I have no idea if she's a Marvel character.
AndiOh, okay.
Tannerbecause I didn't know about this connection with Spider-Man or with Luc Cage That would tell me that it's a Marvel character. But I know that she exists. She's from the comics and there's a Netflix show.
AndiAlright. Well that's good that you guys are like nerding out. I won't call it mansplaining. It was border lining that if it is a real Marvel hero, she sounds very nineties to me. Her name's Jessica. That's. someone born after the sixties Yeah. Came of age in the eighties or nineties. So that I'm guessing, based on her name. if I were her, I'd be mad though that like Peter Parker gets to like, swing around on Webs when he gets bit by a radioactive spider. She gets radioactive juice, spilled all over her, and you guys can't even name what she's good at, Like She's
Supsgood at beating
TannerShe But you she
Andihave, you don't have to be radioactive to
Supsgood
Andipeople
TannerShe could just
Andiout. Yeah. Yeah. Like Okay. We seem pretty confident that she exists. So the, the real question is, is she a part of Marvel? Which would mean that like soup's made up all of this connection to Peter Parker. So I guess that could have happened Very possible. But then
Tannerwhere'd Yeah,
AndiI think that he is just making it easier for me because even guessing between three is the part I can't even do that.
Tanneryou think this is definitely a Marvel character?
AndiI mean, you're so confident she exists. something she, she's. gritty, dark enough to be in the DC universe or like sparkly enough.
TannerYeah.
AndiSo then I'm like, well, where else did she come from?
Tanneryeah.
AndiCan we hear the fourth Superhero
Supssuper superhero number. Theodore Salas, AKA Maning.
AndiLike appropriate for all audiences because man thing sounds very not
Supsappropriate
TannerI think they just ran out of names.
AndiEven Bobo was more like inventive
SupsYeah, So Ted Salas was a biochemistry professor at the Empire State University. was then recruited by the US Army for Project Sulfur. The project was basically around inventing compounds that would allow Army to survive biochemical warfare
AndiMm-hmm.
SupsSalas, he invented the s o two. which granted immunity to all known toxic elements which are used during biochemical warfare.
AndiNice.
SupsBut that's a catch. It had a side effect. anybody who used the serum turned into a monster.
TannerOf course,
Andiclassic. So it's
SupsSo same thing himself. he transformed into the man thing. When he injected himself with the, so, and crashing his car in a mystical dump.
AndiWait, what there? He has two reasons to be weird also. You have to explain what he looks like, because I'm picturing a giant
Tannerpenis
Supsand think of a, like a green, like a huge green monster. Right. like
Tannerswamp thing. Yeah.
Supsyeah, Exactly. Exactly.
Andiweird.
SupsYeah. And communication isn't his strong suit. And it seems to have lost most. If not all, human intellect. But man thing can sense human emotions.
AndiDoes he change color based on people's emotions? Is he just like a
SupsNo, he's green. green. No, he's green. But he Secrets a potent, corrosive substance that can melt through anyone's.
TannerOh my goodness. So
Supsbecause of the swamp environment He's dependent on the swamp environment to continue getting his power. So he has
Tannerto
Supslive in the swamp.
Andihe's like a d and d
TannerYeah. Yeah.
SupsLike, yeah,
TannerSo can you switch in between man thing
Supsno, no, no. no. no. Yes, yes. Yes. he transformed into the man thing.
Andibut like
SupsYeah. Yeah.
Andiit doesn't seem to really be benefiting from the whole, I'm immune to all poisonous
TannerYeah. You can't poison me. Okay, well what good are you?
SupsWell, that's why they canceled the project. Sulfur. So man Thing had its own movie in 2005, but only has a 14% score on Rotten Tomatoes
Tannerit and it
Supsat the box office.
TannerYeah.
Andithey tried to make a man thing movie.
SupsYes.
Andibefore Ironman.
TannerYeah.
AndiOkay. So how does he interact with the rest of the Marvel?
SupsI think this, project Sulfur was later on included in. So that's where, Project Sulfur is the connection.
AndiSo is man thing a hero?
SupsYes. His arch enemy, at least in the movie was this industrialist, right? Who was
AndiOh, who had
TannerThis With the toxins.
SupsWith the
Andihe made the swamp. So he's
Tannerlike an anti pollution hero.
AndiHe's Captain Planet in blob form.
TannerYeah. Yep. He feels emotions
AndiYeah. This is weird. He feels human
Supsbut He doesn't have
AndiWhat does he do about that? He can't give someone angry. He can't give someone a hug. Like What
TannerSounds like it would get canceled very
Andifast. Yeah. I mean, like, I can't even imagine like the drawings like, in a comic, right?
Tannerthat, this is very unbelievable to me that that was a comic book character.
AndiYeah. I mean, the argument of like, just throw everything at something. Mm-hmm. Let's make toxic sludge sentient, but not really, but kind of. He has emotions. Yeah, sure. But I don't know, it sounds very unbelievable. Well, Tanner and I are going to guess now, which of these four heroes is not a real Marvels superhero. But before we do that, can you please recap the four of them for us?
SupsYes. The four superheroes are number one, death, aka Mistress death, or Lady death. Number two, Bobo AKA Detective. Number three, Jessica Jones, number four, Theodore Salas, AKA Maning. One of them is not a Marvel superhero,
TannerSo which ones could you rule out or which ones are you leaning towards?
AndiI'm so screwed. I have like such little context to go off
Tannerof Mm-hmm. ,I
Andiknow so little. Um, So I think that one might be the lie. Mm-hmm. because we made the whole thing about how, like, it's not a Marvel superhero. But that doesn't mean that soups came up with this
TannerRight.
Andiwell, it sounds like a God
TannerYeah. from a, religion or mythology. Yeah.
Andiso,
Tannerokay.
AndiI don't know. But also at the same time, that's the problem with it, is that like, it wouldn't be that hard for even a, comic writer to come up with the same idea. Yeah, You know, let's personify death, like humans have been doing that for thousands and thousands of years. So like, I could also believe that, somebody really did at Marvel,
TannerYeah, I know. They do that all the time in the comics,
AndiBobo. I'm not gonna touch Bobo. I want to manifest
TannerBobo. Okay. See, I really like Bobo, but I think that that one is probably not a Marvel superhero. I think it's from something else.
AndiOh, Okay.
TannerI think it's real, but it's not from Marvel.
AndiOkay.
TannerJessica Jones, I believe.
AndiYeah. And then honestly, man thing is the one I feel the most confident. Wow. Is like a superhero of some kind. Again, there's the issue of is it Marvel? cuz I know so little about superheroes and comics in general that like, if you were like, oh, this is a superhero from such and such, okay, well you got me cuz I, yeah. I was never gonna get that. Right. But honestly, it sounds the least like something soups would've made up.
Tannerup. Mm-hmm.
AndiOkay. Cuz it, it's so bizarre.
TannerYeah.
AndiSo I think, I'm just going guess number one because I can imagine where soups could have made it up,
TannerOkay. And I think it's number two. I think Bobo is real, but not from Marvel. I Hope.
AndiI have.
Tanneris real.
AndiNo, I want Bobo
Supstwo.
Tannerbe real. Yes,
SupsOkay. Alright, right, so we've got death and Bobo. it's exactly what Tanner said. I went super basic. Bobo, aka. Detective Chimp is from the DC
TannerIt is. on. Yes. Bobo. So who does he work with?
Andijustice. League, is that right? right. Serious
TannerYou know your stuff. You know your stuff.
Supsyou know, you know, you know enough Novo good
Tannerto Justice League. I
SupsI think there are some mentions, but it's not like he's like an active member
AndiOkay.
SupsThat's his comics were a huge hit. Oh, they were. Yeah. Yeah.
AndiI mean, we clearly Loved it, you know? Yeah. Honestly, you know, I want a Bobo movie to exist. I won't watch it but I want it to exist. I would be
Tannerexcited about that than Ant Man.
SupsYeah.
AndiYeah. Or Aquaman or
SupsYeah.
TannerYeah. Wow. They have so many different things in comics. Like such obscure heroes.
SupsWhatever you have imagined
Tanneralready
Andiexists. ,that's, yeah. I find that with a lot of stuff that's kind of the issue where it's like, no, this is already a story.
SupsYeah.
TannerWow.
Andiwell, at least Bobo's real.
Tannerright? I'm
Andireally devastated at all because at least Bobo's Real, I should have known.
TannerI should have,
AndiThanks for listening to this episode of the Ihad of Known podcast. we'll be continuing with our nerd theme beyond the lookout for that. And as always, thanks for listening. Okay. It better not just be like a DC one. I'm gonna be mad because, you know, I don't know the difference.
