Sups

it's not just like a pop song. There's a lot of nuances in the song where she's actually Showing her vocal prowess, right? So, even though I'm trying to put myself as like one of these

Andi

members, you

Sups

and I'm about to vote.

Tanner

Is this a popular song? Have

Andi

is 18 on the Billboard High 100 songs.

Tanner

of this song,

Andi

it's like they're Supes who likes music and like actually cares about the Grammys. And then there's Tanner, like, What am I doing Hello and welcome to I should have known the trivia game show that can't be trusted each week One of our quiz masters will present you with four facts about a topic, but one of them is a lie And welcome to our continuing musical theme for the month, I'm your quiz master today I'm Andy and I'm going to be presenting you with four songs that all won The record of the year award at the Grammys, except one was snubbed, did not win the award. So join our other hosts, Supes and Tanner, in trying to figure out which one is a lie.

Tanner

a

Andi

So our pub quiz question for the week is, In what year did the Grammy Awards begin, and what was their original name?

Sups

Oh wow. I wanna say 1934.

Tanner

I'm gonna say like 1946

Andi

any guesses on the original name?

Sups

Gram

Andi

Gramophone

Tanner

Awards?

Andi

They were called the Gramophone Awards. So Grammy is short for gramophone. Yeah. It started in 1959.

Sups

Oh, wow.

Andi

Yeah, so Grammys is the official name now. It's the yearly awards for the Recording Academy of the United States. just like the Academy Awards for Film, it's a group of people who are in the business and they vote on stuff.

Tanner

Okay. So. it's not based on like the best selling or anything like that. It is just like the Oscars where you have an Academy voting.

Andi

So, yeah, the Grammys. There are a lot of awards. I think the next Grammys will have 94 categories. but there are four awards that are considered the most prestigious because they are called, oh General Field, Awards. These are for, all the genres.

Tanner

So anyone can

Andi

So anyone can win this. There is Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year, which is what today's episode is

Tanner

about. And that's not the same as the other two.

Sups

Yes,

Andi

and Song of the Year and Record of the

Sups

the Year. Two different things.

Andi

Two different things, kind of confusing. Often the same song wins both. song of the year is for song writing. So this award goes to the writers of the song, not the performers.

Sups

Okay.

Andi

The record of the year goes for an individual song. And it goes to the performer and the production team. So All four of these songs are hugely popular. They are all on Billboard's Hot 100 of all time.

Sups

Okay.

Tanner

I'm very prepared for this.

Andi

think you know these songs, though. So we'll go in chronological order. record of the year number one, from 1969. Hey Jude, by the Beatles. So,

Tanner

you play it for us? I

Andi

jam!

Tanner

one goes. Mm-hmm.

Andi

we're all familiar with this song.

Sups

I I think, I might know a word

Tanner

yeah.

Andi

yeah. so this is from the 11th annual Grammys. Hey Jude. it's 13th on the Hot 100. It won record of the year, song of the year, and best pop performance by a group.

Tanner

Wow. It really cleaned up, you say.

Andi

guess kind of, yeah, I guess you could say that. And then the album magical mystery tour was nominated for album of the year, but did not win.

Tanner

of the year. Okay.

Sups

Year,

Andi

the song did though.

Tanner

Yeah, I can imagine when this came out, it must have just like... In an instant hit, cause people still love it all over the world. Like still today, it's

Sups

a favorite. I'm sorry, I'm a little bit cautious about this. Is

Tanner

Yeah. Yeah. Is it cause you don't think it's a great song?

Sups

you don't think it's a great song? No, I think it's a fantastic song. And as you know, it's one of my favorite songs. I think it won a lot of other awards, but I think that's the thing about it. Never won the best.

Tanner

Mm-hmm. record.

Andi

of the

Tanner

Mm-hmm.

Sups

I think it didn't

Tanner

win.

Sups

Okay. But I'm trying to think.

Tanner

have an idea of what did

Sups

Yeah. Whoa. Yeah. 1969. Yeah. It's just, jogging through my Grammy knowledge. And

Tanner

could any other Beatles song win then? Yeah. Like it's, any, anything from that album is up for

Sups

grabs too.

Andi

Yes. Yeah. I mean, technically songs can compete against each other from the same artist. Yeah,

Sups

yeah. yeah. yeah. you know, there's always this thing, right? I mean, with Academy Awards, right? Whenever some movie doesn't win and then you're like, Oh yeah, that movie should

Tanner

have won

Andi

Mm-hmm. or

Sups

nobody knows what they're voting, right? The process is like, it's all like secret ballot. Right.

Tanner

Hmm.

Sups

What do you think about this?

Tanner

I'm believe it. Okay. I think, it's a great song. I think it would've been recognized as such in those years. Mm-hmm. I think that even a snobby, like academy person would think that it's a good song. Like it's not just, you know, a pop hit, But that's just my gut. I, I honestly don't know how the Grammys go. Yeah.

Sups

I don't feel very confident because I think that was the whole thing about this song that it. Didn't win.

Andi

Well maybe hearing the other three songs will help you decide.

Sups

yes,

Andi

Alright. So. Record of the year number two, from 1982, Betty Davis Eyes by Kim Cairns.

Tanner

Is this a popular song? Have

Andi

is 18 on the Billboard High 100 songs.

Tanner

of this song,

Andi

I knew Tanner would not know this

Sups

know this song. Now see, this one to me is more like a Grammy winning. What? Yes.

Tanner

I think this song sounds like trash

Andi

It was 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. So like, only 5 beneath Hey Jude here. So this is an extremely popular song, Tanner.

Sups

Yeah.

Andi

I, don't know

Sups

I've been? Yeah. Or what happened

Andi

in the 80s. It won record and song of the year in 1982.

Sups

The album,

Andi

Mistaken Identity Lost, to Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. So, John Lennon makes a little appearance twice, technically.

Tanner

Two parents.

Andi

Kim Cairns. Okay. Um,

Tanner

is true. I think this is true.

Sups

this is the one. I

Andi

fake. I think this is true.

Sups

she's only known for like a few songs, right? I mean,

Andi

this was huge. This was by far her most famous Yeah. The two songwriters, Donna Weiss and Jackie De Shannon, they had released the song themselves in the seventies. Okay. But didn't really.

Sups

really go anywhere.

Tanner

Yeah.

Andi

And then Kim Cairns performed it and it's very famous for her voice. She has like a raspy, very unique voice. The

Sups

The way she says

Tanner

precocious is good.

Andi

is my favorite part. Why do you

Sups

this

Tanner

fake?

Andi

Mm.

Sups

I've never heard of this.

Tanner

cannot believe that anyone would allow

Sups

it to win

Tanner

Grammy. It's not

Sups

a good song.

Andi

Yeah, but you know, you, you only heard like literally

Tanner

all I need to hear. That's

Andi

it. Oh no. Come on.

Sups

No, you know, the reason why I think this is true is because during the 80s period, like this is the kind

Tanner

of music that

Sups

wins.

Andi

I will say that, like, if you go through, like, the 60s and 70s, you're like, yeah, I know all of these songs. They're all, like, the big ones. But then, yeah, when you get to the 80s, I was having a problem because I was trying to... Pick songs from kind of different time periods and it was like, yeah, the ones in the 80s The grammy winners aren't on the top 100 That was such a problem the 80s is definitely, I would say that's the Oscar period of the Grammys.

Tanner

Where they were totally off from the

Andi

the way off from the, Yeah, But this song was hugely

Sups

it was a commercial success. I mean, there's no doubt about that. Like, it's

Andi

a

Tanner

few people know song. Okay, I'll take your word for it. I guess we have to listen to two more. I even though I already made up my

Andi

mind Wow. Yeah, I like how you guys both have decided it's one of the first two. Do you not want to hear the other two? Oh, we're done I mean, the other two are some jams, so... Bring it on, bring it on. let's just jam to them. Okay, fine. You guys, You have to keep playing the game.

Tanner

Fine

Sups

Alright.

Andi

Alright. Record of the year number three. 1994, I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston. This was from

Tanner

the

Andi

36th annual Grammy awards and it's song

Tanner

60 Okay.

Andi

on the hot

Sups

100.

Andi

It

Sups

won

Andi

record of the year, best pop performance by

Sups

a female. Mm-hmm.

Andi

It was also nominated for the R& B Female Vocal, but did not win. And the album of the year won the Bodyguard soundtrack as the song was featured in that movie. So that one album, a

Tanner

the

Andi

won album of the year because of this song, let's be real. This was, this was carrying

Tanner

the, Yes. Like in the movie, I guess.

Andi

the movie. Is this

Sups

a remake?

Andi

Yes, Tanner, do you know who originally

Tanner

wrote the

Sups

Yes,

Tanner

yes.

Andi

yeah, Dolly Parton originally wrote this song.

Sups

Yeah, that's a jam. Yeah. Do you believe this one.

Tanner

Do you believe

Andi

this

Tanner

one? I totally believe this

Sups

makes you

Andi

makes you say that? I

Sups

I don't know

Tanner

I don't care. Because it's I think it's objectively a better song. I don't know why it's number

Sups

but it

Tanner

but it

Andi

It's, it's

Sups

So now you can see that, like, the ranking in Billboard has, like,

Tanner

like, no connection. It's totally disconnected,

Sups

Yes.

Andi

I have a feeling.

Sups

Oh, that's because you I think this was the biggest song. What else was it? War was bigger

Tanner

1994 I will always remember Um, actually I think it was Backstreet Boys Backstreet Boys,

Andi

yet?

Tanner

I mean, you, you're making a good point. Like the early nineties. Mid nineties. Yeah. What other huge hit would it be competing against? Yeah.

Sups

was, uh, no,

Tanner

I believe it. I

Sups

think that it's

Tanner

still a great song. I think she performs the heck out of it,

Sups

it's

Tanner

believable that the Grammys would award her this,

Sups

you know, they wouldn't pick a different one. Right. But also that technically it's not just like a pop song. There's a lot of nuances in the song where she's actually Showing her vocal prowess, right? So, even though I'm trying to put myself as like one of these

Andi

members, you

Sups

and I'm about to vote. Yeah.

Tanner

it would be very surprising to me if this

Sups

was this note.

Tanner

Right. I don't know. I don't know music history at all. If that's not obvious.

Andi

Alright. So we've got one more. Record of the year number four from 2012.

Sups

2012.

Andi

Rolling in the Deep

Sups

Okay,

Tanner

2012. I definitely know this one.

Sups

No. Oh, I thought you, you were singing it.

Andi

It's not karaoke night. I do sing this a lot of karaoke. so this is from the 54th annual Grammys. It is number 39 on the

Tanner

Wow. I have a question

Andi

Yes. how do Grammys work.

Tanner

Is any song that's released that year up for

Sups

record of a year? It's

Andi

the previous year.

Sups

Okay. yeah.

Tanner

the previous year. So like any of her songs on that

Sups

album

Andi

could have won. Yeah, that happens sometimes. Yeah. Okay.

Tanner

sometimes an artist can be competing against themselves because They have

Sups

two

Andi

nominees Mm-hmm. the same category. In the same category. Or even you can have the same song by

Tanner

Oh, yeah.

Sups

Oh.

Andi

both be nominated. That happened This was

Tanner

her and Adele's award

Andi

show. Oh, yeah, she actually won three of the four general field. So Rolling in the Deep won record and song of the year and her album 21 won album of the year. It also won best short form

Sups

music video. Yeah.

Tanner

no way.

Andi

Yeah, that's it. That's a Grammy now.

Tanner

Huh.

Andi

And best pop solo performance. So she's actually became the second person ever to win all four of the

Tanner

general field. Yes, she won three that night. And she had won

Andi

some point in her career. Yes, she won three that night.

Sups

And she already

Andi

And then she had won

Sups

Best New Artist. So this was actually Adele's second album after 19 and I think this is the time when she became super popular in us or like even globally. Right. I'm inclined to believe everything Andy just said. I She was like sweeping everything, and

Tanner

I mean the timeline lines up then with this album. I know it was a

Andi

really big deal when

Sups

came out Yeah.

Tanner

You don't

Andi

think they

Tanner

snubbed her?

Sups

No,

Tanner

Maybe she's playing on this.

Sups

She knows

Tanner

you like Adele. And she's like,

Sups

she's playing it. Yeah. And she's talking with me with Adele and Hey Jude. So that's like, Oh, wow.

Tanner

I'm surprised she didn't do like

Andi

Katy Perry Well, I mean, if I, if I could have done all of your See, Supes has you know, a much more refined karaoke repertoire where you do

Sups

Perry

Tanner

Yeah, they're not Grammy winners.

Sups

think, Oh, wow. Now. Yeah, no, no, I dunno. No. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was like, Oh, this is so easy. I know it. Yeah. I know the answers, but

Tanner

so confident.

Sups

yeah.

Tanner

Looks like

Andi

I don't.

Sups

I have to like backtrack now. Everything

Tanner

that I just said for the

Andi

last

Tanner

I

Sups

half an hour.

Tanner

do

Andi

I do really like having you two as the guessers because it's like they're Supes who likes music and like actually cares about the Grammys. And then there's Tanner, like, What am I doing

Sups

18.

Tanner

I don't uh,

Sups

Rolling in the Deep, you said it's 30?

Tanner

Uh, 39.

Sups

39. 39. 39.

Tanner

Wow.

Sups

again,

Andi

if not

Tanner

Adele. Mm-hmm. who, if Katy Perry won that year then I would just poop myself, I cannot believe that

Sups

I

Andi

don't think Katy Perry won that year.

Tanner

I think it

Andi

must be her. Yeah,

Tanner

So, I guess, before we pick which one is the snub, could you please repeat the four Grammy winners,

Andi

number one... Hey, Jude, by the Beatles.

Sups

Number

Andi

two Betty Davis. Eyes by

Sups

Kim Cairns,

Andi

number three. I will always love you by

Sups

by Whitney Houston.

Andi

And number four, rolling in the Deep by Adele.

Tanner

One of those did not win.

Sups

Yeah.

Tanner

I think Andy

Sups

puts a lot of strategic thought

Tanner

into her lies.

Sups

the lies. that she's playing with this stuff. Playing. 100%. 100%.

Andi

percent

Tanner

no doubt about it. So it's gotta be that the lie is someone who you forgot about, you know? So it's gonna be

Sups

like, it's not Adele,

Tanner

like, it's Katy Perry, how could

Sups

you miss that? This is supposed to be nervous, you know? yeah. yeah. As it was like fireworks came out that year, like I know, so let's do it this way. Let's take number two out because I think number two definitely

Andi

did

Tanner

Okay, think so? Okay. I'm on base with you. I disagree, but I'm gonna follow your

Andi

logic. Okay

Sups

So now we are with Hey Jude,

Andi

I

Sups

always love you

Andi

and closing it with Jude. Yeah.

Tanner

You were very suspicious of hey Jude

Andi

I was, But then...

Sups

I think this,

Andi

got tricky.

Tanner

Yeah, and I think this Idea of like the recent one I can

Sups

can pinpoint more

Tanner

possible winners. Yeah. You know, so maybe that's an issue where I can't name a single other artist who would've beat the Beatles, but I can do that with Adele But like maybe that's an issue here. Maybe it is The Beatles.

Sups

is the Beatles.

Andi

Yeah.

Sups

is off about Hey Jude I think it's between one and four. and maybe that's where the trick is, and

Tanner

which one do you

Sups

think?

Tanner

Mm-hmm.

Sups

I

Tanner

think you made a pretty good case for the last one. Yeah. That it could be a different band. It could be a different one of her songs.

Andi

Yeah.

Tanner

You know what? I'm going to say the second one because I cannot for a second believe that that song won. I am just, mm, no. I think

Sups

I'm just, no. I don't know, I was so confident with Hey Jude.

Tanner

I think

Andi

it's

Tanner

it's not

Sups

Jude that got the snub.

Andi

Yeah.

Tanner

gonna believe Adele really did

Sups

I think, I think Adele did

Andi

could have 80s, so you guys are going with the first two. Hey Jude and Betty Davis Eyes. This is very funny because when I was researching this, I

Sups

told Tanner

Tanner

told Tanner I knew exactly which one he would pick. And he's

Andi

like, no you don't. And you picked exactly what I thought you would pick. I knew it. I was like,

Tanner

you don't. He picked exactly the

Andi

He's gonna pick number two. It did when let me play you the song that beat

Tanner

he's gonna pick it. It Let me play you the song Simon Garfunkel?

Andi

Yeah Yes Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel won record of the year in 1969. knew it from the start. Paid to, probably one of the most famous Grammy snubs ever. Yeah, Hey Jude not win, it lost to Mrs.

Tanner

Wasn't it also the

Andi

highest in the billboard of the four? Of the four, yes, but it is not the

Tanner

highest on the billboard

Andi

to be snubbed. Oh, really? Fun bonus fact, the long time number one, now number two

Sups

The Twist

Andi

by Chubby Checker never won a Grammy. And that was the highest on the billboard

Tanner

highest on the Billboard without winning.

Andi

now it was number one until it was usurped

Sups

by

Andi

blinding lights by the weekend.

Tanner

it was

Sups

yeah.

Tanner

Oh, Simon

Sups

and Garfunkel.

Tanner

and Garfunkel. That's the

Sups

I mean, like, I was with Heiju from the start,

Tanner

but like, rolling in the deep, like, just threw me off a little bit.

Andi

I knew I had to throw in someone else that Sups really likes. Mm-hmm. Because then he would second guess himself.

Tanner

Oh my

Andi

Yeah. Happy that. But it was, it's also hard to like line these two lists up because like the winners of Records of the Year and the songs on the hot 100. Mm-hmm. They don't overlap as much as you might think.

Sups

Yeah.

Tanner

But you perfectly, like, strategized and customized it for

Andi

And I, And I, knew you didn't know Bette Davis Eyes, and I knew you would pick that one simply because that's the white man confidence. He's like, I don't know it, so it

Tanner

know it, so

Sups

Trust me next time, America.

Andi

So yeah, it didn't win any of those awards I said. Those were the three it was nominated for. Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Performance. So Record went to Mrs. Robinson.

Sups

Robinson

Andi

And Song went to a song

Sups

called Little Green Apples.

Tanner

Never heard of it. I don't believe it.

Andi

Bobby Russell and O. C. Smith.

Sups

and who won the album of the year in 1969?

Andi

Glenn Campbell, By the Time I Get to Phoenix.

Sups

Okay,

Tanner

Yeah, right. Never heard of this.

Sups

Yes, exactly that. That's the one that I was thinking. Yeah. I mean,

Tanner

Exactly, that's the one I was

Sups

Yeah, yeah. amazing.

Tanner

Well,

Andi
