it's not just like a pop song. There's a lot of nuances in the song where she's actually Showing her vocal prowess, right? So, even though I'm trying to put myself as like one of these
Andimembers, you
Supsand I'm about to vote.
TannerIs this a popular song? Have
Andiis 18 on the Billboard High 100 songs.
Tannerof this song,
Andiit's like they're Supes who likes music and like actually cares about the Grammys. And then there's Tanner, like, What am I doing Hello and welcome to I should have known the trivia game show that can't be trusted each week One of our quiz masters will present you with four facts about a topic, but one of them is a lie And welcome to our continuing musical theme for the month, I'm your quiz master today I'm Andy and I'm going to be presenting you with four songs that all won The record of the year award at the Grammys, except one was snubbed, did not win the award. So join our other hosts, Supes and Tanner, in trying to figure out which one is a lie.
Tannera
AndiSo our pub quiz question for the week is, In what year did the Grammy Awards begin, and what was their original name?
SupsOh wow. I wanna say 1934.
TannerI'm gonna say like 1946
Andiany guesses on the original name?
SupsGram
AndiGramophone
TannerAwards?
AndiThey were called the Gramophone Awards. So Grammy is short for gramophone. Yeah. It started in 1959.
SupsOh, wow.
AndiYeah, so Grammys is the official name now. It's the yearly awards for the Recording Academy of the United States. just like the Academy Awards for Film, it's a group of people who are in the business and they vote on stuff.
TannerOkay. So. it's not based on like the best selling or anything like that. It is just like the Oscars where you have an Academy voting.
AndiSo, yeah, the Grammys. There are a lot of awards. I think the next Grammys will have 94 categories. but there are four awards that are considered the most prestigious because they are called, oh General Field, Awards. These are for, all the genres.
TannerSo anyone can
AndiSo anyone can win this. There is Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year, which is what today's episode is
Tannerabout. And that's not the same as the other two.
SupsYes,
Andiand Song of the Year and Record of the
Supsthe Year. Two different things.
AndiTwo different things, kind of confusing. Often the same song wins both. song of the year is for song writing. So this award goes to the writers of the song, not the performers.
SupsOkay.
AndiThe record of the year goes for an individual song. And it goes to the performer and the production team. So All four of these songs are hugely popular. They are all on Billboard's Hot 100 of all time.
SupsOkay.
TannerI'm very prepared for this.
Andithink you know these songs, though. So we'll go in chronological order. record of the year number one, from 1969. Hey Jude, by the Beatles. So,
Tanneryou play it for us? I
Andijam!
Tannerone goes. Mm-hmm.
Andiwe're all familiar with this song.
SupsI I think, I might know a word
Tanneryeah.
Andiyeah. so this is from the 11th annual Grammys. Hey Jude. it's 13th on the Hot 100. It won record of the year, song of the year, and best pop performance by a group.
TannerWow. It really cleaned up, you say.
Andiguess kind of, yeah, I guess you could say that. And then the album magical mystery tour was nominated for album of the year, but did not win.
Tannerof the year. Okay.
SupsYear,
Andithe song did though.
TannerYeah, I can imagine when this came out, it must have just like... In an instant hit, cause people still love it all over the world. Like still today, it's
Supsa favorite. I'm sorry, I'm a little bit cautious about this. Is
TannerYeah. Yeah. Is it cause you don't think it's a great song?
Supsyou don't think it's a great song? No, I think it's a fantastic song. And as you know, it's one of my favorite songs. I think it won a lot of other awards, but I think that's the thing about it. Never won the best.
TannerMm-hmm. record.
Andiof the
TannerMm-hmm.
SupsI think it didn't
Tannerwin.
SupsOkay. But I'm trying to think.
Tannerhave an idea of what did
SupsYeah. Whoa. Yeah. 1969. Yeah. It's just, jogging through my Grammy knowledge. And
Tannercould any other Beatles song win then? Yeah. Like it's, any, anything from that album is up for
Supsgrabs too.
AndiYes. Yeah. I mean, technically songs can compete against each other from the same artist. Yeah,
Supsyeah. yeah. yeah. you know, there's always this thing, right? I mean, with Academy Awards, right? Whenever some movie doesn't win and then you're like, Oh yeah, that movie should
Tannerhave won
AndiMm-hmm. or
Supsnobody knows what they're voting, right? The process is like, it's all like secret ballot. Right.
TannerHmm.
SupsWhat do you think about this?
TannerI'm believe it. Okay. I think, it's a great song. I think it would've been recognized as such in those years. Mm-hmm. I think that even a snobby, like academy person would think that it's a good song. Like it's not just, you know, a pop hit, But that's just my gut. I, I honestly don't know how the Grammys go. Yeah.
SupsI don't feel very confident because I think that was the whole thing about this song that it. Didn't win.
AndiWell maybe hearing the other three songs will help you decide.
Supsyes,
AndiAlright. So. Record of the year number two, from 1982, Betty Davis Eyes by Kim Cairns.
TannerIs this a popular song? Have
Andiis 18 on the Billboard High 100 songs.
Tannerof this song,
AndiI knew Tanner would not know this
Supsknow this song. Now see, this one to me is more like a Grammy winning. What? Yes.
TannerI think this song sounds like trash
AndiIt was 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. So like, only 5 beneath Hey Jude here. So this is an extremely popular song, Tanner.
SupsYeah.
AndiI, don't know
SupsI've been? Yeah. Or what happened
Andiin the 80s. It won record and song of the year in 1982.
SupsThe album,
AndiMistaken Identity Lost, to Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. So, John Lennon makes a little appearance twice, technically.
TannerTwo parents.
AndiKim Cairns. Okay. Um,
Tanneris true. I think this is true.
Supsthis is the one. I
Andifake. I think this is true.
Supsshe's only known for like a few songs, right? I mean,
Andithis was huge. This was by far her most famous Yeah. The two songwriters, Donna Weiss and Jackie De Shannon, they had released the song themselves in the seventies. Okay. But didn't really.
Supsreally go anywhere.
TannerYeah.
AndiAnd then Kim Cairns performed it and it's very famous for her voice. She has like a raspy, very unique voice. The
SupsThe way she says
Tannerprecocious is good.
Andiis my favorite part. Why do you
Supsthis
Tannerfake?
AndiMm.
SupsI've never heard of this.
Tannercannot believe that anyone would allow
Supsit to win
TannerGrammy. It's not
Supsa good song.
AndiYeah, but you know, you, you only heard like literally
Tannerall I need to hear. That's
Andiit. Oh no. Come on.
SupsNo, you know, the reason why I think this is true is because during the 80s period, like this is the kind
Tannerof music that
Supswins.
AndiI will say that, like, if you go through, like, the 60s and 70s, you're like, yeah, I know all of these songs. They're all, like, the big ones. But then, yeah, when you get to the 80s, I was having a problem because I was trying to... Pick songs from kind of different time periods and it was like, yeah, the ones in the 80s The grammy winners aren't on the top 100 That was such a problem the 80s is definitely, I would say that's the Oscar period of the Grammys.
TannerWhere they were totally off from the
Andithe way off from the, Yeah, But this song was hugely
Supsit was a commercial success. I mean, there's no doubt about that. Like, it's
Andia
Tannerfew people know song. Okay, I'll take your word for it. I guess we have to listen to two more. I even though I already made up my
Andimind Wow. Yeah, I like how you guys both have decided it's one of the first two. Do you not want to hear the other two? Oh, we're done I mean, the other two are some jams, so... Bring it on, bring it on. let's just jam to them. Okay, fine. You guys, You have to keep playing the game.
TannerFine
SupsAlright.
AndiAlright. Record of the year number three. 1994, I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston. This was from
Tannerthe
Andi36th annual Grammy awards and it's song
Tanner60 Okay.
Andion the hot
Sups100.
AndiIt
Supswon
Andirecord of the year, best pop performance by
Supsa female. Mm-hmm.
AndiIt was also nominated for the R& B Female Vocal, but did not win. And the album of the year won the Bodyguard soundtrack as the song was featured in that movie. So that one album, a
Tannerthe
Andiwon album of the year because of this song, let's be real. This was, this was carrying
Tannerthe, Yes. Like in the movie, I guess.
Andithe movie. Is this
Supsa remake?
AndiYes, Tanner, do you know who originally
Tannerwrote the
SupsYes,
Tanneryes.
Andiyeah, Dolly Parton originally wrote this song.
SupsYeah, that's a jam. Yeah. Do you believe this one.
TannerDo you believe
Andithis
Tannerone? I totally believe this
Supsmakes you
Andimakes you say that? I
SupsI don't know
TannerI don't care. Because it's I think it's objectively a better song. I don't know why it's number
Supsbut it
Tannerbut it
AndiIt's, it's
SupsSo now you can see that, like, the ranking in Billboard has, like,
Tannerlike, no connection. It's totally disconnected,
SupsYes.
AndiI have a feeling.
SupsOh, that's because you I think this was the biggest song. What else was it? War was bigger
Tanner1994 I will always remember Um, actually I think it was Backstreet Boys Backstreet Boys,
Andiyet?
TannerI mean, you, you're making a good point. Like the early nineties. Mid nineties. Yeah. What other huge hit would it be competing against? Yeah.
Supswas, uh, no,
TannerI believe it. I
Supsthink that it's
Tannerstill a great song. I think she performs the heck out of it,
Supsit's
Tannerbelievable that the Grammys would award her this,
Supsyou know, they wouldn't pick a different one. Right. But also that technically it's not just like a pop song. There's a lot of nuances in the song where she's actually Showing her vocal prowess, right? So, even though I'm trying to put myself as like one of these
Andimembers, you
Supsand I'm about to vote. Yeah.
Tannerit would be very surprising to me if this
Supswas this note.
TannerRight. I don't know. I don't know music history at all. If that's not obvious.
AndiAlright. So we've got one more. Record of the year number four from 2012.
Sups2012.
AndiRolling in the Deep
SupsOkay,
Tanner2012. I definitely know this one.
SupsNo. Oh, I thought you, you were singing it.
AndiIt's not karaoke night. I do sing this a lot of karaoke. so this is from the 54th annual Grammys. It is number 39 on the
TannerWow. I have a question
AndiYes. how do Grammys work.
TannerIs any song that's released that year up for
Supsrecord of a year? It's
Andithe previous year.
SupsOkay. yeah.
Tannerthe previous year. So like any of her songs on that
Supsalbum
Andicould have won. Yeah, that happens sometimes. Yeah. Okay.
Tannersometimes an artist can be competing against themselves because They have
Supstwo
Andinominees Mm-hmm. the same category. In the same category. Or even you can have the same song by
TannerOh, yeah.
SupsOh.
Andiboth be nominated. That happened This was
Tannerher and Adele's award
Andishow. Oh, yeah, she actually won three of the four general field. So Rolling in the Deep won record and song of the year and her album 21 won album of the year. It also won best short form
Supsmusic video. Yeah.
Tannerno way.
AndiYeah, that's it. That's a Grammy now.
TannerHuh.
AndiAnd best pop solo performance. So she's actually became the second person ever to win all four of the
Tannergeneral field. Yes, she won three that night. And she had won
Andisome point in her career. Yes, she won three that night.
SupsAnd she already
AndiAnd then she had won
SupsBest New Artist. So this was actually Adele's second album after 19 and I think this is the time when she became super popular in us or like even globally. Right. I'm inclined to believe everything Andy just said. I She was like sweeping everything, and
TannerI mean the timeline lines up then with this album. I know it was a
Andireally big deal when
Supscame out Yeah.
TannerYou don't
Andithink they
Tannersnubbed her?
SupsNo,
TannerMaybe she's playing on this.
SupsShe knows
Tanneryou like Adele. And she's like,
Supsshe's playing it. Yeah. And she's talking with me with Adele and Hey Jude. So that's like, Oh, wow.
TannerI'm surprised she didn't do like
AndiKaty Perry Well, I mean, if I, if I could have done all of your See, Supes has you know, a much more refined karaoke repertoire where you do
SupsPerry
TannerYeah, they're not Grammy winners.
Supsthink, Oh, wow. Now. Yeah, no, no, I dunno. No. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was like, Oh, this is so easy. I know it. Yeah. I know the answers, but
Tannerso confident.
Supsyeah.
TannerLooks like
AndiI don't.
SupsI have to like backtrack now. Everything
Tannerthat I just said for the
Andilast
TannerI
Supshalf an hour.
Tannerdo
AndiI do really like having you two as the guessers because it's like they're Supes who likes music and like actually cares about the Grammys. And then there's Tanner, like, What am I doing
Sups18.
TannerI don't uh,
SupsRolling in the Deep, you said it's 30?
TannerUh, 39.
Sups39. 39. 39.
TannerWow.
Supsagain,
Andiif not
TannerAdele. Mm-hmm. who, if Katy Perry won that year then I would just poop myself, I cannot believe that
SupsI
Andidon't think Katy Perry won that year.
TannerI think it
Andimust be her. Yeah,
TannerSo, I guess, before we pick which one is the snub, could you please repeat the four Grammy winners,
Andinumber one... Hey, Jude, by the Beatles.
SupsNumber
Anditwo Betty Davis. Eyes by
SupsKim Cairns,
Andinumber three. I will always love you by
Supsby Whitney Houston.
AndiAnd number four, rolling in the Deep by Adele.
TannerOne of those did not win.
SupsYeah.
TannerI think Andy
Supsputs a lot of strategic thought
Tannerinto her lies.
Supsthe lies. that she's playing with this stuff. Playing. 100%. 100%.
Andipercent
Tannerno doubt about it. So it's gotta be that the lie is someone who you forgot about, you know? So it's gonna be
Supslike, it's not Adele,
Tannerlike, it's Katy Perry, how could
Supsyou miss that? This is supposed to be nervous, you know? yeah. yeah. As it was like fireworks came out that year, like I know, so let's do it this way. Let's take number two out because I think number two definitely
Andidid
TannerOkay, think so? Okay. I'm on base with you. I disagree, but I'm gonna follow your
Andilogic. Okay
SupsSo now we are with Hey Jude,
AndiI
Supsalways love you
Andiand closing it with Jude. Yeah.
TannerYou were very suspicious of hey Jude
AndiI was, But then...
SupsI think this,
Andigot tricky.
TannerYeah, and I think this Idea of like the recent one I can
Supscan pinpoint more
Tannerpossible winners. Yeah. You know, so maybe that's an issue where I can't name a single other artist who would've beat the Beatles, but I can do that with Adele But like maybe that's an issue here. Maybe it is The Beatles.
Supsis the Beatles.
AndiYeah.
Supsis off about Hey Jude I think it's between one and four. and maybe that's where the trick is, and
Tannerwhich one do you
Supsthink?
TannerMm-hmm.
SupsI
Tannerthink you made a pretty good case for the last one. Yeah. That it could be a different band. It could be a different one of her songs.
AndiYeah.
TannerYou know what? I'm going to say the second one because I cannot for a second believe that that song won. I am just, mm, no. I think
SupsI'm just, no. I don't know, I was so confident with Hey Jude.
TannerI think
Andiit's
Tannerit's not
SupsJude that got the snub.
AndiYeah.
Tannergonna believe Adele really did
SupsI think, I think Adele did
Andicould have 80s, so you guys are going with the first two. Hey Jude and Betty Davis Eyes. This is very funny because when I was researching this, I
Supstold Tanner
Tannertold Tanner I knew exactly which one he would pick. And he's
Andilike, no you don't. And you picked exactly what I thought you would pick. I knew it. I was like,
Tanneryou don't. He picked exactly the
AndiHe's gonna pick number two. It did when let me play you the song that beat
Tannerhe's gonna pick it. It Let me play you the song Simon Garfunkel?
AndiYeah Yes Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel won record of the year in 1969. knew it from the start. Paid to, probably one of the most famous Grammy snubs ever. Yeah, Hey Jude not win, it lost to Mrs.
TannerWasn't it also the
Andihighest in the billboard of the four? Of the four, yes, but it is not the
Tannerhighest on the billboard
Andito be snubbed. Oh, really? Fun bonus fact, the long time number one, now number two
SupsThe Twist
Andiby Chubby Checker never won a Grammy. And that was the highest on the billboard
Tannerhighest on the Billboard without winning.
Andinow it was number one until it was usurped
Supsby
Andiblinding lights by the weekend.
Tannerit was
Supsyeah.
TannerOh, Simon
Supsand Garfunkel.
Tannerand Garfunkel. That's the
SupsI mean, like, I was with Heiju from the start,
Tannerbut like, rolling in the deep, like, just threw me off a little bit.
AndiI knew I had to throw in someone else that Sups really likes. Mm-hmm. Because then he would second guess himself.
TannerOh my
AndiYeah. Happy that. But it was, it's also hard to like line these two lists up because like the winners of Records of the Year and the songs on the hot 100. Mm-hmm. They don't overlap as much as you might think.
SupsYeah.
TannerBut you perfectly, like, strategized and customized it for
AndiAnd I, And I, knew you didn't know Bette Davis Eyes, and I knew you would pick that one simply because that's the white man confidence. He's like, I don't know it, so it
Tannerknow it, so
SupsTrust me next time, America.
AndiSo yeah, it didn't win any of those awards I said. Those were the three it was nominated for. Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Performance. So Record went to Mrs. Robinson.
SupsRobinson
AndiAnd Song went to a song
Supscalled Little Green Apples.
TannerNever heard of it. I don't believe it.
AndiBobby Russell and O. C. Smith.
Supsand who won the album of the year in 1969?
AndiGlenn Campbell, By the Time I Get to Phoenix.
SupsOkay,
TannerYeah, right. Never heard of this.
SupsYes, exactly that. That's the one that I was thinking. Yeah. I mean,
TannerExactly, that's the one I was
SupsYeah, yeah. amazing.
